thumb of michigan | i have a post and beam barn that is pretty rough. roof is good though so i want to try and save the barn. it has the usual non existant foundation and some beams are rotted off where they sat on the ground. i was thinking of easing it back straight with a couple cables anchored to a couple poles and taking up a little slack each day over time. for the poles i was thinking of digging a post hole on the left and right side of the beams and putting in a treated or maybe white oak post and sandwiching the old beam and running a long bolt through in several spots and tightening them up. anyone done this or have some other tips or ideas? no foundation other than some rubble and rocks to speak of and the barn does not have a floor in it, just dirt and one level. it is about 34 by 60 or so hip roof.

Lenawee Co Michigan | Yep. This is an auction picture I took last year 4 miles from here. The barn in the picture was repaired just like you are talking, it was straightened and put up on treated posts by each original beam, the post and beams drilled and bolted together. The repairs were done many years ago and it saved the barn. My barn has practially no foundation but is still straight after 103 years. southern MN | Not quite a barn, but looks like I'll be trying to do some fixup over the next few weeks. Probably should pile it down & start over, but kinda poor this year after some other projects the past 2 years, and it's a handy shed for my needs. Leaning more than it looks, and the front corner is picked up off the sill. Tough old building tho, took a heck of a whallop from that tree. Nothing of substance cracked, just leaned it over a bit. Had a tractor, pickup, and wagon inside as well as lots of lumber & tools, nothing got a scratch. I was in a shed 75 feet away as the storm went through Friday. Was raining so hard I didn't even see the damage or tree at the time. --->Paul (shedtree.jpg) Attachments ---------------- shedtree.jpg (88KB - 669 downloads)
