My brother-in-law has bought an acreage ,24 to be exact, and realises his need for a tractor to push snow, mow some grass with a scrub-mower and move some old cars around (he restores old Mopars). He has come across an International 966 and has asked me what I think. I have no experience with this model of IH but I told him I knew of a few guys who would have :-) So........take it away guys tell us the good, the bad and the ugly. Please don't suggest a new acreage tractor or a different make, he just wants some info on a 966 :-) TIA.

Boone, Iowa | I think this would make a good acreage tractor. You have good hydraulics to run a loader& dual pto. I always tried to buy a neighbors 966 to put a loader on, but did not get it done. I ended up with a 1066 for a while and put a WL 42 on. If you are not careful, the power of the 1066 could be hard on a loader. That is why I always thought the 966 would make a better loader. The 966 has a smaller cubic inch engine than a 1066 but still a good engine. If it has a cab, I think I would take it off and add the fenders and platform.

Test the TA...put in low gear run at High Idle, pull TA back shouldn't slip/stop. Should have a water filter. Other basic mechanical checks. I would send in an oil sample if he has time to do it before buying.

Washington, Kansas & Lincoln, Nebraska | If he could find a 966 or 100 Hydro in good shape, he'd really like it. Personally, I think the gear drive version of those would be a little clumsy for an acreage/loader tractor. I had a 986 on a loader. My Genesis powershift is a much nicer loader tractor.

West Union, Illinois | The 966 was underestimated by most people. I would disagree on the comment about engine sizes. I think the 966 and 1066 had the same engine, but the 1066 was turbocharged and had a some heavier components. I believe in the '86 series the 986 had a bigger engine than the 1086. Potential problems with a 966: water filter - if it does not have one and has not been serviced regularly turn and walk away. TA - as 1586 said, try it out. I have a cheap solution, though. Put it in direct and take the lever off. I did that 20 years ago and haven't missed it very often in our application. The power steering unit may leak. When it does the only good solution is either remove it and take to a dealer for repair or have them come get the whole tractor and do the repair. Don't jump inside that unit without training. The 966 transmission ... well, it was not IH's best idea. I have no problem with it, but I've driven one for 35 years. You just learn to be patient and hold your mouth right. My son-in-law just detests it. That would be my biggest reservation about using it on a loader. I have to work on the steering on mine. The steering arms are lose on the shaft and I suspect the only solution is replace them. That was a weak point in all the '66 tractors. But as the photo below shows, we carry quite a bit of weight on the front end. If you are going to put a loader on it, that is an area just to be watchful of. Oh! A common complaint with the 966 is when doing a lot of idling and low engine speed use they would blow oil out the exhaust. Especially if it has been running an auger that is common. We had 2 966's. Still have one. Replaced one last year with a 7210. At times I wish I had kept it, but since we have quit most row crop cultivation didn't put 100 hours a year on it the last 4-5 years. Not sure as to the 966 but the 1066s had the 414 DTs

Boone, Iowa | The 966 has a 414 w/o turbo and rated at 100 pto hp. The 1066 has 414 with turbo and rated 125 pto hp. I was thinking the 966 had the 358 engine. As far as trying to find a Hyrdo 100, you are going to spend some money. My neighbor just sold a good one with a very nice WL 42 loader for $10,000. I never had much trouble using a loader on the 1066 we had. We did have to go through the front end and replace some bushings and fix the steering cylinder anchor pin on the left side with a tapered pin. I am trying to buy a 1066 right now that has been sitting around and has a stuck engine. I miss the 1066 after getting rid of it.

southern medina county ohio | i have a 1466 and it shifts like a dream, 3 years ago when i had my buddy install a new TA and clutch i had him rebuild all the shift linkage, and i do keep it adjusted along with the TA dump valve and clutch and trans brake, as long as those are kept in adjustment, they shift smooth as silk. alot of times i dont even touch the clutch shifting between 1-4, drive it like a semi.
