Subject: John Deere Tractor step kit


South Georgia		I am looking at putting the K&M tractor step kit on a 4255. I was wondering if anyone has used one of these kits and what your thoughts on it are. Also do you have any pictures of the tractor with them on it. I am looking at either the regular step kit or the swivel, most likely the swivel ones so I can move them into the middles when spraying cotton instead of it running right down the row.

The two kits I am looking at are

What are your opinions on them? and does anyone have any pictures of them on a tractor other than a 60 series.

Embarrass WI		I have them on a 4250 and a 4450. If I had to do it over again, I would spend the extra money for the Deere steps. The K&M work, but seem to flex more than I think they should.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463		A K & M Step was put on my 4630 within an hour of it's first time on my farm.

I think it should be a law that all Deere 30 thru 55 seies tractors have them.

Just so much better than the factory step.

Below are two not the best pictures of the step on my 4630.

And one of the step on my renter's 4020.
I was so tired of getting on and off that poor step thing that I put the step on the 4020 with my own money.
The same step fits the 10 and 20 series [without cabs] as the later 30-55 Soundgard tractors. But you have to buy a mounting kit, about $80-
I would say the step does more for the 4020 than the later tractors.

Also the bottom step on the 4630 photo can be removed. On the 4020 three steps were pretty close to the ground, so I only used two of them .

Macon, IL		I got that same step from Sloan Express. Really sturdy-happy with it.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463		Why people will have a 30-55 series Deere SoundGard tractor worth $10,000 at the least, up to $40,000- or so, and be too cheap to spend $200-$300- for a good step is beyond me.
One fall would pay for it.

And Kooiker. I will not be in your part of the world Wedesday.
Had a tooth pulled and not feeling the best.

I put the JD steps on the 4040 and 4050. I remember there was an issue with the steps not fitting all 4050's there was a serial number break for some reason.

Before my Dad passed away he took a header off the battery box step getting out with the old little steps. Luckily Co-op guy was  here spraying and made sure he was okay, I was planting at another farm while he was working ground here.  

As Bobby mentioned the 3rd step is pretty close to the ground. In fact I used to remove mine when chisel plowing or plowing in cornstalks as a precaution from catching it on anything while going over uneven ground.

Hey Bobby glad to see you moved your toolbox around to the door side too on your 46. Could never understand why they put it on the opposite side the door was on. It was very unhandy especially when plowing. I had to make some spacers to set it out from the frame to clear the AC compressor so the lid would open but it sure is nice having it right by the steps and door. Other side is tied with by Baldwin pass filter anyway.

Effingham, IL		I have a Deere and a K&M. The K&M does give more than the Deere, but if I only had the K&M I probably wouldn't notice!

South Georgia		Thanks for all the pics and info on this. From looking at them, in the pictures posted and the pictures on the websites I have found. The rigid mount ones look good, but the swivel one I am unsure of. It seems to need a lil work or something. My main thing is for them to go between the rows instead of right down the row like the steps that are on it now, be nice to swivel them to where the row just slides right under them with little to no damage to the cotton. I am tired of spraying all summer with no steps.

Southern Indiana		Here is a pic of the swivel on a 4630 maybe has a little more give then the rigid ones but does fine by my standards. Sorry the pic doesn't show much but thats as close as i have of it. We have the rigid ones on a 3020,4020,4230, and a 4650 sure does make it a lot nicer then the old steps.

West Tennessee		Probably a little late but here is ours on the 4640. They're the cheaper ones (Sloan's or Shoup, can't remember) but they are nice. Need one or two more sets

Subject: Another modification to do (pics)



nc IA		My 4840 came with the new style step and another modification - take your old step and reverse the second step part bracket - then you can mount it to the right hand side battery box, very handy at times.
I have the swivel style, had to weld up the battery box a bit which was getting thin and started to crack, but glad I did as I have a loader bracket on it now and needed to swing it from the original position it came in.

Saskatchewan		I was thinking of getting a steps like these now as last week I took spill off the steps and cracked my back on the saddle tanks, broke three ribs in the process. Anyways will these steps work with a big saddle tank

Alberta Canada		Just priced on out at Deere $460 cnd. Might be best to look at the others for $200.

South Georgia		Yeah, I priced the Deere onese also, had to sit down.

I was also wondering like Wheatking, if these steps would work with saddle tanks. I know it is a pain to get in our tractor that has tanks on it. Well still trying to decide what to go with, they would be nice to have, and be even nicer if they would go down the middles instead of right down a row of cotton like the steps do now.

I put the Deere steps on both our tractors and don't regret it for a moment. I thought about it and figured I would gladly spend a few thousand to get a cast off my leg so I could get back farming after taking a fall off those postage stamp sized original steps so why not spend $300 and prevent it from happening in the first place.
In my humble opinion this one is a "no-brainer". Get'r'done.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463		Speaking of K & M Brand steps.
Shoup steps are K & M.

The most command is the 'rigid mount'. These bolt to the frame rails just in front of the battery box. The steps are angled forward.

The 'adjustable mount' bolt to the bottom of the battery box, and can be set to point straight out or forward.
Pretty sure the adjustable mount step will work with saddle tanks.

Also adjustable mounts probably should be used on 50 and 55 series tractors with MFWD and there bigger front tires.

I think the steps that are sold by Deere mount to the battery box, not sure.
Or if the Deere step can be adjusted.

And pretty sure there are other people making them besides Deere and K & M.

It is likely that at some point in time Nolan and I will be going out to Calmers to get some corn head parts and will have to stop by to see you.
