Pioneer buys NuTech, two other seed companies

Pioneer Hi-Bred said today it has purchased NuTech Seed of Ames and two other seed companies, AgVenture of Kentland, Ind. and Hoegemeyer Hybrids of Hooper, Neb.

The three companies have been part of Pioneer’s Proaccess marketing system since Proaccess was organized in 2008. Proaccess continues to include five other seed companies located in Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Louisiana.

The Proaccess members already have the right to sell Pioneer-licensed products. Pioneer president Paul Schickler said Wednesday the acquisitions of NuTech and the two other companies will solidify the arrangement.

““We have unique agreements with each of our Proaccess distributors,” said Schickler. “For these three seed companies, solidifying our relationship through acquisition will improve their ability to serve their customers’ needs.”

Terms were not disclosed.

Pioneer in 2009 reversed a decade of lost market shares to Monsanto and its DeKalb, Asgrow, Kruger subsidiaries. The Proaccess agreement has been credited in part for the turnaround.

NuTech general manager Tim Elliott said the sale “will allow our customers to continue to gain access to new genetics and traits.”

He added “this action creates permanency with one of our key suppliers of innovative technology.”

Pioneer and Monsanto are in a bitter battle over not only sales of corn and soybean seeds but also the licensing of genetic traits, where Monsanto jumped to a clear lead after the introduction of biotech seeds and Roundup Ready technology in particular.

The matter has generated lawsuits from both sides and a federal investigation into possible antitrust violations, largely based on complaints by Pioneer against Monsanto.

Monsanto meanwhile on Wednesday announced the licensing of its Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean technology to Dow Agrosciences, which sells primarily through the Mycogen brand.

Roundup Ready 2 Yield is touted by Monsanto as the successor to Roundup Ready genetic technology, which goes off patent in 2014.

Most notably, the Monsanto/Dow agreement allows Dow to “stack,” or combine Roundup Ready 2 Yield traits with Dow-developed traits. Controversy over similar stacking by Pioneer with Roundup Ready traits led to a Monsanto patent infringement lawsuit filed last year against Pioneer.

Monsanto vice president Brett Begemann said “more farmers will be able to experience the higher yield opportunity of Roundup Ready 2 Yield in new trait combinations and soybean brands they prefer.”

Monsanto began selling Roundup Ready 2 Yield last year and said it now is on about 6 million acres of U.S. farms.

“Our experience in working with the trait gives us the confidence to expand this licensing agreement,” said Antonio Galindez, president and chief executive officer of Dow AgroSciences.

So does this mean I can now get the same seed number from Pioneer as Nutech, similiar to the Monsanto owned companies?

I hope they don't go down the road of the ASI business model...

What are the thoughts on the NuTech side of the deal?

Good? Bad? Somewhere in between?

That is what I was hoping also. Less than impressed with my ASI seed quality. Nutechs was much better, no chipped and broken kernals.

Why would anyone think otherwise? They looked at monsanto and decided to fight fire with fire.

Now you can get your nutech or hogemeyer seed at pioneer (screwyou) pricing.

this makes me kind of sick.

If Company A is doing something and losing marketshare, why would Company B do the same and expect better results?

Pioneer bought Currys seed company a few years ago, pretty much all new numbers that act alot like some pioneer hybridsSurprised

It doesnt make sense for these big companies too buy the small ones and not become more effcient selling more units of the same hybrid or variety.

I am not saying all the hybrids and variety's are the same, but I am sure some of them are.

Makes me sick too.

I had much better yields when it was Thompson beans and the first few years of NuTech corn than I have the last two years. I absolutely HATE the "G2 Genetics" and have refused to plant them, as they suck in my area.

Guess I will have to start all over and find a new brand of seed to sell and buy.

I refused years ago to plant Pioneer seed corn or beans, there were so many more brands in my area that not only yielded better, but also stood, looked and harvested easier than the big P.

Another excellent family owned company swallowed up by corporate.

One more reason that seed corn will be $500 a bag in a few years.

Market share war....Monsanto vs Pioneer. Buying small seed companies is a fast way to pick up a higher percent marketshare. I don't agree with it but I believe that is what is going on.

when you find a good seed co that you like please tell me. I am really disgusted at the way this monopoly game is allowed to be played out with us as the pawns. When they finally get all the seed biz in the country watch how crappy our seed quality will become.

How many independents are left in the seed corn industry now? I was using AG Venture and Lewis, which, Lewis is a Monsanto company already.

I tried some Burrus a few years ago, after Patriot imploded. So did several others in the area, and the products they offered at that time didn't work well in this area. Maybe that has changed, don't know. I'm not sure there is even a local dealer any more. I think guys have resigned themselves to having to buy from the bigs.

Burrus is a Pro Access partner of Pioneer. If you plant Burrus Power Plus hybrids, these are genetics they have purchased from Pioneer. You will not be able to get the same genetics from the other companies that you get from Pioneer, and you can't get the genetics from Pioneer that will be available from the other companies. All three of these companies have been Pro Access partners with Pioneer previously.

I was told this morning by a Monsanto Rep that "remember Pioneer is owned by Du Pont & therefore these other companies are owned by DuPont and not Pioneer". I was ribbing him some on competition and that maybe they need to look around and see what the competition is doing.

We have a good independent seed company here in central MN -- Dahlman Seeds. I don't think they have the long season hybrids that you guys use in Iowa though. There were 3 other seed companies in the area that have been bought out--Gold Country/Heartland/Dahlco. One factor that impressed me--they (Dahlman) built a new seed plant a few years ago so the seed quality especially corn is very good.

There are still many independent seed companies out there. My guess would be close to 100 in the US and Canada if my sources are accurate. About a year ago I talked to someone in the industry, I think a Syngenta employee that worked with the traits, I can't quite recall, but he said there were about 5 new seed companies per year being formed across the US. So they are out there. I can think of 7 independent seed companies in Minnesota just off the top of my head. All marketing either corn and/or beans under there own brand.

Beautiful seed, all came up, set the planter at 32 or 36 and that is what you got.  Dodged pythium and mucor as well as anything in this area.  Some name brands just flat out died again.

ProAccess is the division in Pioneer that offers the Pioneer genetics to the seed companies.

90% was a figure shared with me from some industry reps.

From what I have been told, Pioneer provides more than genetics to the ProAccess companies. Pioneer also produces, and bags those hybrids for them.

Reading through the documents I recall these being called distribution agreements.

In some cases I heard that Seed Consutants (as an example) would be delivered with corn on a Pioneer stamped pallet.
