Subject: FMC LV Pea Combines

I am writting a story for Heritage Iron magazine on the old pull type pea combines and the way peas were harvested in the 1960's and 70's. I grew up around the FMC LV and H2 pea combines in Western, New York in the late 1970's and early 1980's .

Does any one know when the pull type combines phased out the old stationery viners? In my reserach it looks like the pull type combines pushed out viners between 1960 and 1965.

My other question is about the pea train combine. This early style pull type was a for runner to the LV combine. In some LV information I have from 1966 it states there will be 2,000 units in use by 1967. When were the pea train units used and when did the LV come in to use. From the brochure I have it looks like the FMC H2 pull type came out in 1976 and then the FMC 125 pod stripper came out in 1980.

Mainly I am trying to create a time line in the developement of pea harvesting. Any and all information is appreciated. Pictures are always great to see too.  Here are a few from my archives.

I worked on a pea crew for Green Giant at Belvidere Illinois in 1968 and 69. Owr crew ran FMC LV's . In your second picture--is that a FMC ? There were some of those running out of Belvidere but I thought they were called a Scott.

Paid my way thru college with these beasts. Mainly I ran the mower ahead of the viners. The "pea train" you refer to we called an "Old Scott" (worst part about them was you couldn't back up) and the newer LV's were "New Scott's". I don't know why. Another early viner was the Hamachek (sp). Later I ran the prototype 156 before they came out in full production. Even had some guys from New Zealand come out to take a look at that. It looks like your dates are pretty close on the viners.

That is interesting I never heard of Scott. Did FMC aquire Scott to get in the pea business?

Is this a Scott? I thought it was an FMC. This photo was taken near Churchville, NY in the early-60's.

These pictures came from the FMC plant in Hoopeston, IL. Did FMC aquire Scott? I have not heard of Scott before.

I believe Scott was the original patent holder for the pull type viners and FMC either bought the patent or was the licensed manufacturer. I have a Scott viner that has been converted to a stationary rig for small plot harvest research. I'll look at the tag tomorrow, but I think it says Scott Viner patented 1964 and also has the FMC name.

There is a book entitled "Saving our Harvest" by Ed Kee (former University of Delaware Veggie Specialist; current DE Secretary of Ag). It goes into detail about the progression of the canning industry in the Mid-Atlantic and has some chapters that mention viners. Shoot me an email and I will forward you his email address. I know he's got a lot of interesting information and photos that weren't in the book. (I'd look your question up in the book but I loaned to a friend about 2 weeks ago.)

As an interesting side note, I had a friend that just scrapped out 3-4 H2's several LV's and about eight Hamecheks last winter. I still have 2 H2's, 2 Chisholm Ryder 502's and a Hamechek. There are still several 502's being used in DE and a few H2 parked in barns.

I'll try to get you some more info tomorrow.

Keep the pictures comming, I love seeing them especialy since many were taken neer my farm here in Western NY. We didn't rais peas through that time, grandpa stopped durring the hay loader era and I didn't start into them untill seven years ago and and have had both FMC and Oxbow/Byron combines come to thrash them.

I'm not certian how late it was there but there was a stationary vinner in Avon at least into the 60's since I remember my grandmother talking about hauling pea ensilage home for the cows.

When your done with this story if you want to do one on Bidwell and Bob Equipment and there bean combines I'd like to help.

Are there any of the FMC LV or H2 pea combines still around?

Where would be a good venue to advertise to buy one?

I'm also looking for an old pea combine. Seems like they destroyed them all or what?? can't find any anywhere. If someone knows where some are available, I would be very happy to know.
