Subject: pros and cons of 996 new holland corn head

I am looking for a 6 row 996 new holland corn head. I noticed they were only made only a few years. Any common problems with these heads. i noticed some were available with hyd deck plates. TIA

I think this series head will only work on the newer series combines- won't work on TR series, only CR. Can't convert to the narrower feederhouse on the TR's. I'll take that back, you can, but only by cutting and welding. I think they are a good head, though.

Actually these heads will fit a TR without any tinkering.

I have one on my TR86 and haven't had a moment of troubles with it. The poly on the outside rows will wear thin, beyond that I haven't seen any weakness to this cornhead. I have the hydraulic deck plates...very nice indeed.

Basically the same head as the Case 2200 series.  The 996 is very close to the newer 96c and 98c heads, but I can't tell you what exactly has been changed between the models.  They are a much better head than the 974 NH corn heads.  I was looking for one last year for my TR97, but then ended up finding a Drago in my price range and that's what I really wanted.  There are heads out there for both the CR and TR machines, but the cost to convert between the two is pretty high according to the dealers I talked to - in the $3000 range to change a head for a CR to fit a TR.

Good Luck,

Mike

I guess I was wrong on the series the 996 will fit. I guess it might be the other way around, it won't fit the CR's without cutting and welding in a different center. I have a 96c on my TR86 that I got last year. Can't see how the conversion kiy could cost $3000, all it is is a couple of filler plates for the feederhouse opening, the different lower anchors, and hoses for the deck plates. Mine came off a CR, and the dealer included the kit when I bought it. He might have said the conversion kit is no longer available.

That's the price a dealer with a CR head gave me when I asked about putting his head on my TR.  Maybe he was including shop time in that, but that wasn't the discussion.  I agree it seems ridiculous for what is involved, but then Drago wanted more than $1700 for the adapter for their head to fit my combine.  That was just the adapter, installed by me.  I built my own.
