Subject: How to understand tractor tire sizes?

North Central Alabama
I have a friend that asked me about tires for his small Kubota tractor. He needs rear tires and the size that's on there now is 9.5X24 i know 24"is the rim size. How do you determine tire width and height without 2 different numbers (as in automobile tires)with the only 1 size before the rim size. what difference in width and height on a 16.5X24 verses his 9.5X24?I guess he will have to know his rim width to see if other sizes will work.

The single number is the widest part of the tire when mounted on the standard rim. Tractor tire heights tend to be about 70% of that width, but different sizes and sometimes makers make them differently.

There is a good reference available on line from Goodyear, called the Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook that gives all the dimensions, the rolling radius, the load rating (vs air pressure), recommended rims on all kinds of tractor and implement tires. http://www.goodyear.ca/tires/farm/handbook.html

Your best bet would be to get one of those books. A lot of times they don't use that second number on smaller tires, but sometimes they do. For instance on JD no till drill they use one called 13.5 x 31 x 15, second number being the height. But you wouldn't need a book to know a 16.5 couldn't be used in place of a 9.5. If you had room, you could widen the rim, but then the other side wouldn't match.

I don't think 16.5 is a standard tractor tire width. Usually the sequence has been 13.6, 14.9, 15.5, 16.9, 18.4, 20.8. But there might have been others in 24" diameters. Go get the Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook and once you read it you will know more than you want to know.

NW Washington
Check this firestone ag tire link which explains tire dimensions .
Looks like a 9.5-24 could be replaced by a 240-75 R-24 too.
