East Palestine, Ohio (Columbiana Co.) | unless choke is halfway out. Looking for help getting my old Ford back in shape, but it isn't getting enough gas to run without choke out. Have had the carb apart 3x, checked intake gasket for leaks, and reset timing so far. Wondering if I'm not generating enough vacuum to pull fuel into the intake? Maybe replace the carb? Anybody got any ideas?? Thanks.........The Dumb Farmer (Hunter and ford 007 (Small).jpg) Attachments ---------------- Hunter and ford 007 (Small).jpg (58KB - 665 downloads)

I'm thinking you need to open the load screw on the carb another half turn or more until it runs without the choke. Could idle screw too. I think the point setting / timing can also have a play in those symptoms. I'm not too good on gas engines so someone more knowledgeable can post something right to do.

North Central Iowa | The first thing that I would do is convert it to electronic ignition and make sure that you are getting adequate spark. Here's the place that I've used, but there are other sources - Pertronix . Even if spark isn't your problem, this will definitely make for a nicer running gas tractor. I was having problems with my Ford 601 fouling out the plugs and after much messing around and rebuilding the carb, somebody mentioned this and it's been fine since. I replaced the coil at the same time, although you may not have to. HTH, Mike

If so, with the plug removed, should run a continous stream atleast the size of a drink straw. If your getting plenty fuel to the carb and the main jet is adjusted correctly, you may have an intake manifold air leak. Inspect for bad gaskets , cracks or missing plugs. Also may be weak ignition, a weak spark can more easily light a rich mixture than a normal mixture. Check for strong blue sparks 1/4 - 1/2 inch long at the plug

northwest tennessee | What about the fuel pump? It has a screen in the top of it. I have a 65 ford 4000 gas and is different style than yours but has a fuel pump up front by the water pump. Guy I talked to said if it is a point problem pulling the choke out will not help. So if pulling the choke out helps you are not getting enough fuel. Also check the screen in the bottom of the gas tank for trash. The carb mine has does not have adjustments on it. It is a holley carb.

NW Ohio, near Findlay | Got a 960, same thing, no fuel pump, just gravity. Float bowl and needle seat sometimes sticks, pound in carb and will run. If you can get it to run with by turning out main jet screw, must have dirt or buildup in bowl. Good luck.

Texas/New Mexico Stateline | I was going to suggest the fuel pump also. Our 4000 has a fuel pump and it got where it would not run right sometimes. Changed it and it fixed the problem.

East Palestine, Ohio (Columbiana Co.) | Getting good flow of fuel to carb. It would run sitting in driveway------sort of. From 800 to 1200rpm fairly smooth then rough from 1200 to 2000 rpm, then smooth back out at 2000 thru 2400. Reset the timing(by ear, not with a light) and re-gapped the points. This is all sitting in driveway,---soon as I go to drive it away I have to pull the choke out to make it go. I thought maybe if I worked it a little it might straighten out. So I put 2-3 hours in on the york rake with no change. Points and condenser are new, so maybe change the coil to improve spark?? I still have the old condenser maybe I'll try putting it back on first and see if that does anything. This motor should still be pretty fresh as its only clocked 183 hours since overhaul, and has been apart 2x since then. Would really like to get this thing right as it's almost time to put the mower on!! Thanks for all the help, everybody........The Dumb Farmer
