Bow City, AB, Canada | I'm considering a 1586 for a back up tractor in the HP range I'm interested in. What are the good points, things to watch for etc. I figure that it will get most of it's running during hay season. Do they have good hydraulics to run a round bale stacker etc? I'm not sure of the year, haven't seen the tractor in person yet.

Boone, Iowa | The main thing I do not like about the 1586 is the three speed tranny. I used a neighbors one time on my rotary hoe and never had the right gear to go through the field and turn around, even with the torque. The nice thing about this tractor is the final drives are very strong. You have a good engine, but will have to think about the torque and clutch replacement. I think it would be money better spent on an 88 series tractor. I had a 5288 for several years and really liked the tractor. You can buy these tractors for $18,000 plus/minus. The tranny is synchronized and has low, medium, and high range.

Texas | it seems like the 3 speed trans really hurts resale value . and i can see it being a problem in a hay field . the tractors do have planatary final drives . and it is a little stronger - but not indestructable . it will also have the 86 series rough ride we all dislike . bottom line if it was cheap enough it would work ,it would just have to be cheap enough to put up with the 3 speed trans ,i have a 886 that i like alot .

SE MN | My experience is with a 1486 and a couple 1086s. I loved the 1486 when it was newer because it had all kinds of power to get up and go and it was in a compact package. After it passed 5000 hours and started developing the 86 series noises I no longer like it. It just has too much power considering how heavy it is built and it is wearing itself out. If you can get it cheap the 1586 will run a pto like crazy, but it won't be a very comfy field tractor. PS most 1586 have 1000 pto only. Yes I have seen one with dual pto but that could have been a custom deal. Have a day

I havent had personal expereince using one, but have some church freinds that have a 1486, 1086 and several 88 series IHs. I have ridden along in several of them & heres what I noticed (for what its worth..not much lol) The 1486 rode a lot rougher than the 88s (like mentioned above) and had the gearshift/range selectors on the left side of the seat..something I didn't like at all, but otherwise was fairly quiet, good a/c etc. The 5288 has the controls placed a lot better and also the door seemed to work better. (some IHs had suicide doors lol) The 88s seemed to be a real quiet cab..probably equal to a JD sound guard, where-as the 86 series was quiet but not that good and seemed to have more transmission gear whine. Both seemed to have real good power, and I think they have had generally good results with both series. This info is worth what u paid ;-) lol M.M.

Princeton, MN | I would stay away if you want one for hay work. You will never find a speed you are happy with. They even came out with a different set of gears to put in for 2nd to adjust that but there is just too big of a gap between the speeds. The only use we found for a 1586 is to sit on a big auger and other PTO work. We had a 2 speed pto put on it from a smaller tractor. Tried putting it on the TMR when the deeres were down, but the guys would complain too much about driving it. Unless this model has the PFC hydraulic system (closed center) your hydraulic experience is going to be terrible too, especially when trying to run multiple functions. The only real strong thing on these tractors is that 436 engine, they are fuel efficient and very easy to coax a lot of horsepower out of. jmho

Could it be any worse than an 8 speed powershift in a JD4640?

SE Georgia | It is ,in my opinion, this was the best 86 that was built. The one we had didn't have a t/a so I didn't have that trouble. The most trouble that we had was with the clutch. We tore the hub out of the center of the clutch disc more than once. The 3 speed shifts much better than our 986 and 1086 did.It is still a 86 and not a desirable series of tractor at all.The lack of gears wasn't a problem because we ran these tractors the same time we were running 4630s and 4840s all with 8 speeds.1586s are good cheap hp,but don't expect comfort or a great deal of reliability. We traded ours on a 5488, which was about 20 times better.IMO the 86 series did as much to put IH out of business as anything. Will
