Subject: Allis Chalmers 71/72/73/74 planter unit help

I was given this planter to fix up and loan out to our NWTF members to plant food plots. However, I am not sure what model it is to be able to get the correct parts. I found on Agco's parts website what looks like it and it says its a 71-74 series planter unit. What I don't know is what is the difference between the 71, 72, 73 and 74 series planter units if any and if there is a difference how can I tell what unit I have? There is one metal seed can as well as one poly seed box. There is a brand new poly seed box with no bottom to it at all. Its just a replacement box and I am hoping to get the new bottom so that I can have both seed boxes matched up and in good shape as the metal can isn't in the best shape. It will be good enough for this year if need be but I would like to get this planter fixed up and be set for anyone to use by next year for sure.

So I am not sure if you guys can help but there are not very many Agco or Allis guys around here so I have not found anyone local that knows much about it. Here are some pics I took.

Also, I am going to build a new 3pt hitch on this unit so don't pay any attention to the current, bent up mess thats there. Thanks

NEMO
I think you have a #52 or #54 planter units that are older than the 72 or 74 planters. I'm going by the crank type depth adjusters. I don't think the 72 or 74 used this type of depth control. I think they used the metal seed hoppers on the older planters too but the others may fit. I know the 74 units had a replaceable wear ring around the bottom of the hopper and a quick change population sprocket.
The odd numbered units had runner openers and the even numbered units had disk openers.
As far as plates go I really don't know what fits what, but it might be that they used the same ones but I don't know for sure.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks Frank. You gave me a direction to start looking and hopefully I will figure it out exactly.

Henderson, Minnesota
I can see in that white 5 gallon pail that you have those cream colored plastic adaptors which allow the use of John Deere planter plates. It's easier to find JD plates than AC.

I thind frank-f has this figured out. Those are definitely not 74 series units--they were built to run on 15" centers for soybeans and used roller chain and quick change sprockets for population changes. They look similar to 72 series but the crank adjuster probably means they are older. I believe any AC plate style hopper may fit. The plates used in the latest plate planter are the same and JD plates can be used with the plastic adapter that you have at least one of.

Thanks guys. That bucket is full of plates so I wasn't worried too much about them yet. I didn't know about the adapter though so thank you. I just needed to figure out the actual model of these units so I can order the correct parts. With your help I should be ok now.

Lloyd, how far is Bruce County from Niagara Falls? I go up to NF, Canada about once a month.

Hi Loyd,
I have a 72-74 planter unit that I use to plant garden behind my garden tractor.
You mentioned that you have parts. I need a 20T sprocket for flat chain.
I am trying to speed up the seed plate for garden beans.

Hi Robert in NY,
I am in the process of repairing a round planter box like the one in your picture. My box is older, painted orange when new. It was rusted out about 4" on the bottom. I cut it off with tin snips. (I am still in the process of removing the rust) so I don't have mine re-attached.
It is simple to re attach, just cut and bend in 3 tabs, matching the base, set the box on the base aligning the 3 tabs and turn over the box and take a hammer and bend over the rest of the metal on the bottom side of the base. You will have a good box - just shorter.
I ordered my parts from http://www.schmidtinc.com/partsacplanter.pdf 800 281-2164
They were very helpful.
I have used units like yours with the crank adjust. I have also used the newer pin adjust units.
GOOD LUCK,
DANNY
