Subject: John Deere 5225

Hastings, NE
I am looking at purchasing a 2007 John Deere 5225. 12x12 power reverser trans., 542 loader, MFWD, Cab, 725 hrs. I am wondering if any of you guys have any experience with this size tractor? It will be used on a small acreage for feeding cattle, baling, mowing and loader work, 4 row planter. I was looking for a 5525 and stubbled across this tractor. Will it have enough HP? It has about half of the 5525 but same size frame. Also the hydraulics have about 5 gpm less capacity of the 5525. Any complaints with the 5 cylinder diesel? 5525 has a 4 cylinder.

Thanks for any feed back.

We have a 5225 2wd 12 power reverser that just turned 5 years old and has ~5000 hours on it, all of them in manure. It has a 5 yr/5000 hr warranty and JD has not made any money on this extended warranty. It replaced a JD 4500 4wd that also had its share of issues. The environment these tractors live in is not a good one, so take this as you will.

Have replaced the engine oil cooler 2 or 3 times. Cooler goes bad and pushes all the oil into the antifreeze. Cooler is cheap to fix, but the cleanup is what costs money. Need to flush the radiator and all other components. Warranty has covered it, so I don't have a true cost. I understand this is more on the inline 5 that the 5225 has, but it has happened on the larger models also with the 4 cylinder

Have completely rebuilt the transmission once at ~3000 hours. Warranty covered it again and I don't remember the failure.

Numerous electrical issues, mainly from manure and getting washed everyday. I really hate electronics in these tractors.

A few seats, 3 pt arms and top links, at least 4 new rear wheel rims (crack at welds), 2 or 3 F-N-R shifters (electronics), front wheel bearings and spindles (manure).

Engine and transmission issues are the biggest problem. JD needs to put a heavier rear wheel on these tractors, similar to a front wheel on an 8000. Most other issues are operator error and manure issues. I would prefer a non electronic tractor with a wet clutch, but those two do not seem to go hand in hand anymore. I chose wet clutch this time. I really don't want to own this tractor out of warranty, but with the current dairy economics, I will take my chances for awhile.

We also have a JD 6120 2wd with cab and a 6420 MFWD, cab and loader. If I were you, I would spend the extra money and get a 6000 series over these 5000 series in a heartbeat. Even go look at a different color tractor. JD is not my favorite tractors for under 100 hp, and all we have is JD. I think for the money, other brands have just as good of tractors.

The four cylinder in the 5425 / 5525 is completely different from the five cylinder in the 5225 / 5325.
