Subject: 3630 Spra coupe cutting out under power when hot

Callao, Missouri
I sprayed this morning in tough wet hills with no problem. This afternoon on easier ground the machine would cut out as if running out of fuel when you needed more power. The fuel filter has been replaced and an electric fuel pump was added. Neither seem to have helped. I had thought that this problem got worse on a low tank of fuel, but this afternoon I filled it in the field after it started and that also had no effect. I can achieve the same results by squeezing the fuel hose with my pliers while running. The problem is worse while turning, and it seems that to the right will really do it. This is the peugot engine.

I have thought in the past that it might have a baffle broke in the fuel tank, letting it suck air when low on fuel while turning. That theory is shot since it did it this afternoon after the tank was filled.

I bet that if I wait about 30min- 1hr it will run flawless again.

Any ideas specific to this engine/pump?

West Tennessee
I can't say we've ever had that problem with ours "cutting out". We have lost turbo boost for two different reasons and when it does that it will lug heavily and not have any power whatsoever. Well heck it doesn't have much to start with but it's VERY noticeable. The two things that have caused this for us are the relief valve on the turbo getting stuck and the rubber hose from the turbo to the intake getting a hole in it. Duck tape won't fix that by the way. :-) Probably not your problem. I hope you don't need your pump rebuilt because that was pretty expensive if I remember. BTW we put injectors in ours last year and it made a new machine out of it. It starts like a car now and before you had to crank forever.

There is a screen on the end of the fuel shutoff valve on the very bottom of the fuel tank. If it plugs up it will do just what you are experiencing. First pull the fuel hose off of your pump and let it drain into a bucket for a little bit, it the flow slows or even stops, check the screen. It's not fun to do with a full tank of fuel though. It's just a rubber grommet that holds the shutoff valve in the tank, grab it with pliars and pull hard and it will come out, then you will get a shower of diesel fuel. Have a new grommet ready just in case your is torn for reinstallation. Obviously if you have good fuel flow into the bucket, this is not your problem, but I've seen it fairly often.

Boy I hope you are right about that screen. That would probably be a repair that I could handle. Injectors were replaced in 2004 if I remember correctly.

Thank you both for suggestions.

If it does turn out to be a plugged screen, just cut it off the end of the valve. You don't need it anyways, the filters are there for a reason, and a bunch easier to change.
