NW Iowa | The 856 is getting tired thinking of repalcing with one of these. With a 5.9 Cummins the motor will be food but what about the rest?
Thanks in advance! Forwardperson |

| Have had the 51 and 52 series, very good luck with both, will run on very little fuel. |

Casey Illinois | Have had the 5130, 5230 and a 5240. Great mid-size tractor, no problems with any of them. Used them on the planter, drill, loader, bushhog and sprayer. Just an all around good tractor |

Southeast Florida | Great little tracors, we had a bunch of them leased some years back, got rid of them and bought a fleet of 2955 JD's instead, that was a bad move. The clutches and 2 speeds on the 2955's kept our shop in business. Some genius purchasing agent in the office got the JD sales pitch on resale and reliability the only thing was nobody asked the guy's in the field first. We had to have extra tractors sitting around so we could keep planting cane or laying plastic what ever the chore was that we needed stop and start alot. |

Somewhereville, Earth | the maxxum was the lasting sag of the david brown works, concieved from the P100 project
great tractors, lots here in NZ, many been in hard work all there life, cemented CIH in farmers minds as well as the magnum
have seen a 5130 split for a replacement dampner, but really not seen many apart at all.....lol....like the older style magnums........lol
make sure you get a good straight one, polish it and treat it as your own |

| I have a CIH 5250 which I bought on a farm sale used about five years ago. I love it. It has good power and good fuel economy. It is a pleasure to drive. I use it for planting and spraying. |

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums. | Get one with the 4 speed powershift. The syncro is a waste of an opportunity. We've had two 5240s and they didn't give much trouble in the 6000 hrs that we had them. Like the other guy said, the dash was the weak point. The old green LED dashes were better than the LCD later ones. (at least thats how it went for us) The funny thing about the 5000 series maxxums was the dual fuel caps. To really fill it up, you had to do it from the back. The front fill lid wouldn't let you get a full tank. We used to run the snot out of them with boll buggies in the cotton fields. I liked them. Pretty decent 3 point capacity for that size tractor in its day.

| If you can find one with a three position shuttle shift it will have a much improved electrical system over the older models. We went from an 826 with a loader to a 5140 MFD with a loader and we've been extremely happy with it. The hour meter on our's only works part of the time and I'm guessing it has at least 8,000 hours on it. We've replaced a couple of sensor's on our's, the water pump, an electrical connector on the rear end and redid the king pins in the front axle. The shuttle shift can't be beat for doing loader work, our's has the powershift transmission and it shifts pretty smooth plus the gear speeds are spaced pretty good too. Overall we've been very happy with our's and I'd like to get a second one with a cab or even an MX-120 or 135 to get the bigger hydrualic pump. Going from an older IH to a Maxxum there are a few things that will take some getting used to. 1st is they have a parking brake that is kind of a joke. 2nd they will only run about 18 mph on the road. 3rd is the reversable pto shaft to change from 540 to 1,000 rpm. |

| I have never run a Maxxum but a neighbor has a 5250 mfwd. They have had quite a few problems with the PTO and brakes. They also try to do things with a 115hp tractor that shouldn't be done with 150hp.
Personally, I'd choose to purchase a Magnum over a Maxxum when the cost is reasonably close (ie like comparing a 5250 vs 7110). |

Northeast Louisiana | We have a 5240 and like the others have said, it's been a very solid tractor with few problems. Mainly use to plant and spray with, use it on a small backup grain cart, and sometimes run a ditcher or roller with it. We have disked with it before with a 20 ft. 480, and it did OK for it's size. Ours is a high clearance MFD, with tall skinny tires which make it rough as heck. I also don't care for the cab that much, kinda small and controls seem unhandy after being in a Magnum. But its a good tractor and I'd buy one again. |

Cen IL | neighbor had a 5250. He liked it until some sensors/solenoids started to act up. Dealer put in "updated" ones and it would still just come to a dead stop at times in the field. After 3 cons. summers of this happening, he sold it. It was the 4 speeed powershift version. jeff |

| Rich, maybe you could help me out a little bit--- I have a 5250 doing the same thing you described--works fine until you shift powershift into fourth with the trans hot, then it will "jump out of gear". If I throttle down and press the clutch in and then let off the clutch again, the tractor will take off again. Whats the fix and how much $? |
