Mount Pleasant, TN | Let a family member use my bulldozer, got it back today, it has a broken roller (bottom). How big a job is it going to be to fix it? I know since it is on the bottom, I'll need to break the track apart. Any advice? I've already thought about killing my uncle, but things happen, I just need to get it fixed.
Thanks,
Kevin |

East Prairie, MO | If it's anything like a cat trackhoe I don't think you will have to break the track, we just jacked it up, slacked the track all the way and were able to unbolt and remove the old and replace with new with no major issue. But I don't exactly know if that will work in your case... |

Mid-Missouri | I dont know about pulling the track apart. I would think you could wedge something between the blade and front roller to compress the front idler/track. Do this while the blade is dropped entirely so the front track assembly is in the air, allowing access to the bottom. Be carefull. If you can get the bolts out of the roller, it shouldn't be bad. You may want to look into cat classic parts, as they may be cheaper than some alternatives. |

Northern IN. | You shouldn't have to break track. Just loosen track tension and lower blade down to raise up. Slack should be at bottom and give enough room to replace your roller. Make sure that you also block up tractor so it can't drop down on you. If you need a little more room you can put a shorty Jack between rails and track frame and push down and get a little more clearence. |

Nusbaum Farms LLC Bellfountain, OR | We've done it that way on our A-C's too. Just out of curiosity, what size Cat?

| As seedcleaner says you shouldn't have to break track. If its hydraulic blade loosen track tensioner screw/plug and raise track frame with blade. Block under front idler before working. Should be plenty of sag to work. If it close to the rear you might need to run back track sprocket up on a block. Ours has a hydraulic ripper on the back. The dozer guy that helps work on ours likes the "jack on both ends".
Also agree with Cat Classic. Had a guy at one of Cookes dealerships that was real helpful getting the best parts deals when we lost a driveshaft ujoint and took out a few things between the converter and transmission.
How did he "break" a roller? |

| put a 2x4 0n the bottom of the track rail.loosen the grease fitting on the trask adj.and back up--keep adding wood until slack adjuster is collapsed.should be enough room to get the roller out with the machine jacked up.you can also drill a hole(1/4)" in the roller frame on either side and put some oil in and let it soak.heat the head of the cap screws red hot then hit them with a sledge to release their tension.let them cool till they are warm then put a 1" impact wrench on and break them loose.if they start out reverse the wrench a time or two and less damage will occour to the threads.watch the hot oil that follows the cap screw out of the roller frame.tap the holes out if its an older machine.good luck === dogbone |

NW Ohio, near Findlay | Rx- I never had to split track, you will have enough room when releasing tension. Don't be to hard on family member, was probably going out when he borrowed it. Be careful not to break bolts, use plywood to slid out roller, extremely finger pitching danger. Tap holes out, inspect bolts and retighten after running. One thing to look for, hope other rollers are not worn much or new one will take all the weight. We had this happen, didn't want to put all new ones on, found a used one. |

manitoba | just loosen your track right off, then lift the machine all the way up with the blade. you should be ably to wiggle it out. |

manitoba | oh and put never sieze on the bolts when re assembling. they are really bad for seizing in and breaking. |

Mount Pleasant, TN | He was moving some big rock in a field behind his house. If he was where I think he was, I thought it was solid rock in that area. I guess a rock got lodged in the track and broke the roller. |

SW Iowa | Can't tell if that is the rear or front roller, but you might have to take off the roll next too it to get it off.The track won't bag down enough those two places to give you enough clearence to get the roller out between the rail. If you work a lot of rock you might want to get some rock guards. Not needed here,so a lot of the time you can find used ones cheap that people has taken off here. As far a loosening the track after your relieve the tighter you can use the drawbar pin and put in the sprocket teeth and move the machine slow to pull the tighter and idle back.Good luck. |
