Bought a 26 foot CaseIH 4800 field cultivator. It currently has 9" sweeps with it. I am planning on doing quite a bit of "primary" tillage with it this spring. I'm afraid that I'm not going to like the 9" sweeps on it for that purpose. I think for a second pass they'd be fine. Anybody have any experience? Oh, I'll probably be using CaseIH's maxi-width sweeps. Thanks.

What is the shank spacing on this unit? If it is 6", then go with a 7.5 " at most. Are you trying to kill weeds with your cult. then you need some width? If you are doing some primary tillage, for seedbed prep. then go narrower as the wide sweeps will just want to ride out. What kind of harrow does it have?
Edited by SDFarmboy 3/1/2010 19:09

9's are too hard to level behind...IMO For the money CIH maxi width work good.

6 inch spacing. I hope to be killing SMALL weeds this spring. We'll see. It has a hiniker(I think) heavy 5 bar spike tooth harrow.

Do you have any exprience with the Marathon sweeps from Shoup? They look pretty good, but would probably only save around $1 a shank with freight.

Jewell County KS | I've used some CNH sweeps on a Sunflower and a Kent and will not use anymore. I don't remember if they are maxi-width or not. My problem is the ones I had crack vertically between the 2 bolts and fall off. They do not fit the shank right and when you tighten the bolts they flex I guess and then bust. My dealer says to place a flat washer on each bolt between the shovel and the shank but that does not work and is a poor fix at best. Maybe they will fit a Case machine right but I doubt there is that much difference. The Deere Tru-widths fit and work fine. I can actually wear them out instead of picking them up in the feild.

Western illinois | i've run nothing but 9" on mine since new. the shank spacing is actually 7" so personally i don't think anything smaller than 9" would be effective. bigger weeds sometimes escape with 9" sweeps. as far as broken sweeps, i read about that problem, but personally haven't experienced it.

shanks are on 6.7 inch spacing (don't know why the odd size) I usually run 9 inch sweeps . 7.5 inch sweeps don't leave much room for vibrating, but with the maxi-width should work ok???

Triplett / Brunswick MO / Brookfield | I think I used 9" sweeps for over 20 years. When I bought my DMI Tiger Mate 11 I had 7.5" sweeps put on it. I've been very satified with the 7,5" sweeps. I had a CIH 4800 before the DMI. I think the 7.5's would be OK with it, but keep in mind that the 4800 shanks can and will move side to side by design, and if bushings are worn or springs are weak, it will even move more side to side.

We use to eun 7 1/2" sweeps on our DMI TM IIs but switched to 9" sweeps about 4 years agoafter talking to a neighbor that was running them on their DMIs. With the 7 1/2" we would get an occasionaly giant ragweed slip through, don't see that with the 9". 9" will leave the ground a little chunkier if it's crusted over hard. 5 bar spike harrow levels the ground out good & if the chunks get too bad we hook the crumbler on behind. I personally can't see going back to 7 1/2" sweeps. We use the original "Knock-Ons". WE considered switching to the CIH knock ons but they won't fit the brackets for "Knock-Ons"

Itta Bena Mississippi | I've had a 4800 for 22 years and have always run 9s. Built my own buster bar out of 5" channel with 1" coldroll spikes at a 45 degree angle. Will usually run a a McFarlane harrow behind it if plantining flat. Tom
