tennessee | Will a 95 hp mfwd pull a 5 bottom 14" turning plow? Thinking about a 5240 caseih wonder if it will pull a plow that size.

| MFD? Used to pull a 5 bottom with a 856 IH tractor, soil conditions and cropping history will influence that combination greatly. | |||

Alberta, Canada | I may be completely out to lunch with this, but I am predicting that within the next few minutes/hours there will be a swarm of people, some telling you yes, others telling you no, and finally coming to rest on the conclusion that it depends on your soil conditions. Or maybe it's just me. -Josh Edited by JoshA 2/5/2007 15:14

tennessee | The ground that i'm going to be turning has'nt been worked in several years. It had small trees growing on it. It is river bottom ground, silty loam type soil. It's rough and a long way from home but the owner is letting me have it for "nothing". He just wants to hunt. It's about 80 ac. of what i think is some pretty good river bottom dirt,if i can ever get it worked down to plant.

Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada | around here, if you're pulling 5 x 16 Kverneland, you better have 140+ hp MFWD with european tires but i witnessed a 2-85 2WD white pull 5 x 16 white 508 in the same field, same depth, same speed. later in the day the 508 plow was put on a 700 4WD white (weighted in the front) and it did the same job easier than the 2-85. the 700 was a fiat 780dt that white sold in canada. i didn't beleive it could've been done, till that day, when i saw it. so it depends on the soil conditions, the type of moldboard, the make of plow, the type of tires on the tractor and the weighting of the tractor, and lastly what crop is being plowed down and the preplow treatment to the field. lots of variables....to answer your question. my 2 cents FarmerTom

Chilliwack, British Columbia | we plow 4 20" bottoms about 6-10" deep with a 110PTO hp tractor in the same type soil. It would work, but don't expect to go really fast. you may want to go fairly deep (10" or so) with ground like that, so may make the tractor work hard. I have found that the deeper i go, the harder it is to plow. glenn

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | Back when we used to plow, we used to figure 16 hp per bottom. That was on the high side, according to our neighbors, who plowed with smaller tractors, smaller bottoms, and plowed shallow. Used to be a lot of argument about that back then, doubt if it changed much now. We had bottom land that pulled hard, and lots of variable soils that were dark and light in the same round. I remember shifting a lot, especially with the torque amplifer, sometimes with the gear, in different soils. Our 1066 pulled 6-16's, 856 pulled 5-16's, and sometimes it was plenty, sometimes we went pretty slow. Used to pull 3-16's with the 400 IH, 2-16's with the M Farmall, with the M in third gear, sometimes second. There are so many different soils, and different conditions such as wet and dry, the rule of thumb of 16 hp per bottom didn't really mean a lot. We sometimes plowed with chains on the land side wheel, as the wheel in the furrow had better traction. Also, if the plow is on land, we used to say we lost a bottom of pulling capacity, so you would have to figure more horses per bottom if it were an on-land hitch.

| Use to use an 806D on 5-16, the 1066 was better. Since you are mfwd, it should be better, Why buy 120. hp tractor to plow 80 acres unless you really need it. If you have to , take one bottom off, you will get the job done, might take a little longer. Bob | |||

tennessee | I'm not buying it just for this I need a little better tractor than I have now. I have a 1486 that i have pulled plow with before, but thought if the newer one would pull it it would be a little more comfortable. My air or radio don't work on the 14.

Lapel, In | We used to figure 15 horsepower per bottom here. John ,but keep in mind that was drawbar horsepower, not PTO horsepower.

Huntley Montana | My dad use to tell about the man just east of Worden that was plowing with 5 horses. When asked why he had 5 horses on the plow, he replied " I only own 5 horses" I've seen 200 hp mfwds with 4 -18s having problems in some of that "tigger SH!T". But like the other fellow said "it'll depend on the soil"

Fruita CO | "Here", 5000 ft., shale "tiger sh*t" ground, it takes 110-115 HP to pull 4, more like 140-150 for 5, a 4020 here was a 3-plow tractor, 4320 could handle 4 in most ground... Ron in CO...
