just a tish NE of central ND | Here is a photo I recieved in my E mail.Once in a while this dragline needs to be moved to a new location on the oposite side of the 4 lane highway between Washburn and Underwood ND.So they close the road to trafic and lay down a dirt bed to try to save the highway from destruction.My oldest son got to work one summer durring college doing maintance on this unit in the coal strip mines .It is big.I believe it is all run by electricity and no engines at all. The second photo makes the large road grader look like a toy. There are different styles of the trucks too. Probablly even bigger than these too, but I couldn't say for certain that they are larger and I dont have a photo of the other one I saw not long ago just off of hwy 200. Moving a 100+ feet of dirt for a little seam of coal or tow that might not be more than 8 foot thick seems like a lot of effort put forth for what is there.But there is a lot of hidden stored energy down under the ground.I just hope the govt doesnt make it so tough with its laws and regulations that these local operation don't survive.That would be sad. Henderson, Minnesota | Why does the dragline cross the road? Chief Ironsides will take a very slow, short walk across Highway 83 next Tuesday, temporarily shutting down the highway between Underwood and Washburn and causing all other traffic to be detoured in the meantime. The chief is a 13.5 million pound dragline at the Falkirk Mining Co., and it will cross from the west side of the highway to the east, where it will shovel up overburden at 120 yards a chomp for at least the next 20 years. David Straley, a spokesman for North American Coal Corporation, owner of the coal mine, said the mining company will put down 20,000 cubic yards of dirt over the highway and adjacent railroad track to prevent any damage from occurring when the mighty machine takes its sweet time crossing. The dragline moves only at the rate of one-tenth mph, so the actual crossing will take several hours. It will be the fourth time in the mine's history that a dragline has crossed Highway 83. Crossings were made twice in 1987 and once in 2003. -The Bismarck Tribune I've been in the cab of this rig while it's operating a few times. Unblelievable. It's all electric, has a huge extension cord following it.

Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | Farmer Dale - 1/30/2010 14:55 They moved one across I70 in Indiana a number of years ago, done the same thing as your picture. Quite a site to see. I happened to witness that as well, while traveling to Indianapolis one day. Unbelievable how large those things are. No engines? How long is the extension cord? I would think there would have to be an engine powered generator somewhere. Edited by Illinois John 1/30/2010 17:17

Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | It is a big "walker". There is a big but short extension cord that connects the overhead power line to the machine. they keep building power line as the machine moves at work. For the move, I wonder if they followed the machine with a big genset or if they quickly cobbled overhead lines ? Overhead line would be tough with the frozen ground and snow. wahpeton, nd | I believe that was the machine I rode on about 14 yrs ago. We were near Centre ND. Another is working by Beuhla. there is a couple of them up there. They had a 24 or 2640 John Deere sitting by the machine and its purpose was to move the extension cord powering that thing. totally fascinating!! the operator sat in his seat and run a couple little levers to operate it. a computer kept track of every move the thing made. lunch room, rest room and seating behind operator for visitors. cables on that thing must have been 4-5 inch in diameter. Friend of mine works for the mine and gave me a good tour. also saw the big trucks for coal hauling and the biggest damn Cats for pushing the dirt back in for land reclamation. A site I would reccomend all to see.

About 15 years ago I took my mother to Bismarck for a doctor's appointment, and on the way home I saw this by the highway. I went to the little town nearby and bought any disposable camera they had. They only had the type that took panoramic shots. You can see the vehicle in the 3rd picture in the foreground, and if you look to the left of the dragline in the 4th, you can see the same vehicle. Massive. Edited to add: I see more information on the move at: http://www.bismarckmandanblog.com/ Edited by Hayburner 1/30/2010 18:09 (Falkirk1.jpg) (Falkirk2.jpg) (Falkirk3.jpg) (Falkirk4.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Falkirk1.jpg (75KB - 744 downloads) Falkirk2.jpg (88KB - 726 downloads) Falkirk3.jpg (87KB - 741 downloads) Falkirk4.jpg (83KB - 693 downloads)

wahpeton, nd | We have been running a 9130 CIH tractor that we got from Titan CIH in Wahpeton 4 or 5 years ago. It came from up in your area and it has been repainted but you can see the shadow of a name on the hood that says hagen & sons on it. Would you know anything about history of this tractor? Guess I never really paid attention before but Falkirk mine must like to paint all there equipment white as the Dozers, dump trucks and even the JD Tractor to move the "extension" cord for the big dragline around is painted white but they did forget to paint the weights white or else they added them later. just a tish NE of central ND | A close up encounter of this equipment gives me a sense of just how insignifigant any of my farm equipment and is.A couple of scoops from this thing and he could burry everything on this entire farm, machines, buildings livestock and all.

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State | My father in law worked for Falkirk mine for 29years, I have been on that dragline when in operation, what a beast, I have some photos of my dad and I and my sons standing in the bucket of it, and also a few other photos of Machinery at the mine will try and find and post. The huge dragline is run by electricity, my father in law was a electrician at the mine and was in charge of moving the cable when the dragline moved ahead, they used a small tractor with a three point mounted implement to drag the cables, they are quite large. Crawfordsville, Arkansas | I have pics of it from 2000 when I was in Minot for the wheat harvest. At that time they ran a small CaseIH with the same powerline drag on it. The CaseIH was painted red. There were about 10 of us that walked probably 1/2 mile across a wheat field to get up close and take pics. Some of the group walked all the way to the top of the boom. Seemed like I remember one saying he counted 300 steps to the tip. I stayed at the bottom and snooped around the base of the machine. Had a peek into the inside of the "box" and also looked into the cab area quick. We were afraid of getting caught so I made it a quick trip. Looking back I wish I had climbed up the boom...

quite an experience. They drug the dropcord with it. Used a log skidder to move the cable and ran a pair of D10's with it to clear fencerows and drag the building they used to work on the spare bucket. A massive piece. It was a walker also. 90' diameter pan that it slid on and a pair of 15' wide by 45' long shoes. As it traveled across the landscape it left a perfectly smooth 90' strip with 3' deep by 15' wide ruts on each side.

SW Missouri | Several years ago a coal company moved a dragline about 25 miles cross country close to where I'm at. They pulled a big genset around with an old White 4wd as they moved along. One mine had closed and sold it for scrap price to the other. The new owners ran it for about 10 years before they went broke. It got cut up for scrap a couple years ago when scrap got high. The farmers that they went across were well compensated for the inconvenience. One guy said he hoped they would go across his place several times for what they paid.

NE SD | What's going to happen to the mine if they start taxing the crap out of coal plants? My roommate went up there in college and from what he told me the coal is of such poor quality that they don't ship it anywhere, just burn it in the power plant right there.

Denhoff,ND right in the center of the State | It is very good coal, years ago my father in law would take his pickup there and load it up and take home to burn in his house and shop, it was chunks that fell off of trucks and was going to go to waste. The coal is actually ground up and made fine and blown in the burners at the plant I was told. There is actually talk of them opening up a place to load coal there and you will be able to buy it there. The coal over by Center ND is not as good has alot of clay and rock it, makes clinker in the fire pot. Terry
Chad H |
| ||
NE SD | His reasoning was actually the amount of water the coal has in it, I think for that specific mine. They used the belly dump haul trucks to take the coal directly to the plant. I looked at his pictures on FB and none of the equip. was white.
