Subject: Selecting sweet corn varieties

It is that time of year again to pick sweet corn varieties. Last year we had Silver King and Peaches and Cream. I did a search but still am wondering which varieties to order. Both were good and froze well. What varieties would you recommend this year that are good fresh and good to freeze. This is in western Ohio. Also, where do you get your seed from?

Thanks for your input. Jim

Honey Select for the fresh market.

It tastes good, and you can plant it next to field corn without problems.

It is our best seller and most requested variety. I should mention that we are 80% roadside market.

Vision Yellow, the kids requested it from the freezer for Christmas, it is that good.

Avalon White, my favorite corn fresh.

Providence mixed, love that corn.

They all fit my growing regimes and the the coons just love them!

Going to be very opinionated on this one for the guys planting Ambrosia/incredible etc. Pioneer gave us some to plant. It was isolated in staggered plantings so it did not cross pollinate. There is absolutely no comparison in eating quality and holding quality comparing extra tender (277) to the older varieties. Please just try some you will see what I mean.

Some of the new Augmented SH2's are just phenomenal! Most all of the fresh/ farmer market growers here have all been planting triplesweet's, us included. Tryed several acres of extra tender 278a, an Mirai 301, Wow! Like you said, no comparison. We had been pretty high on Avalon, Honey select,an providence but no more. While the newer sh2s are a little less grower friendly the taste an quality make it worth the effort. In fact the Mirai will command a premium price over the triplesweets.

Are you saying the extra tender is better than Ambrosia/Incredible?
