Central Illinois | Instead of purchasing a disk, has anyone ever used Deere 2410 or equivalent in corn/soy rotation farming. I wonder how it would do with soybeans stubble or cornstalks going to beans. I seems to be a better soil management tool than a disk (which have some major drawbacks). These chisel plows seem to be used more out in wheat and small grain areas. I was wondering if these tools could be utilized in the corn belt? They seem less expensive for equivalent widths compared to disk.
Thanks and stay warm |

| I have a 2410 Chisel Plow, Will have a 608C Chopping Corn Head next year and plan on just chisel plowing corn stalks however I do plan on pulling a JD 200 "crumbler" behind it to knock down the rootballs since I know my soil will not get "too fine" for over the winter from doing this. | I think a chisel plow would work good in bean stubble to blacken the ground some. In corn stalks the problem is going to be residue flow and the fact that they won't size corn stalks like a disk or even a disk chisel. The big question we need answered before we can say it will work or not is what your trying to accomplish with your fall tillage? |

Portland, ND | A chisel plow works great on soybean ground if your combine has a chopper. If you have a heavy crop and no chopper, a wet fall will give you fits.
As for corn, they work great with chopping heads, not so much with other heads. |

swmn | The thing I really like is pulling a 28ft 2410 vs. a 17.5ft ripper. Also one machine for both corn and beans. I ran a 2" spike in bean stubble and a 4" twist in corn stalks. Everything I did was either stalk chopped or chopping head. Very happy so far. Will see in the spring what it looks like. |

Southwest Minnesota | I've done it and seen it done. Some successful some not so successful. Definitely need a chopping corn head. A harrow on back to level bunches helps. Chop as close to the ground as possible. |

nw iowa lyon co. | How about after disking the stalks first? I dont have a chopping head or stalk chopper so Im thinking of disking (Which I already have) and running a regular chisel to get it as black as possible for coc. Do you think it would plug ? |

Minnesota | We have a 2410 that works great for bean stubble. It has good trash clearance and does a nice job. We have 2" straight sweeps.
I have tried it corn stalks (that were chopped with a REAL stalk chopper) and it not work. The machine plugged after a few hundred feet. Even before it plugged it didn't do any worthwhile tillage.
I would give it a hopeless prognosis for working behind a John Deere chopping corn head. The Deere head leaves so much stalk "fluff" that is difficult to bury. We have trouble getting all of the fluff buried even with a disc ripper.
Other chopping corn heads might be better. I don't know.
