Looking at a 4240 quad with a turbo. Any thoughts good or bad. Were they the same motor/cooling system as the 4440? any insight would be great.

I had one and sold it to a guy southeast of Kansas City an hour. To my knowledge any turboed 4240 was a modification. Motor was the same (466) and I believe the add on came from a JD combine or a 4440, can't remember. Fuel economy and power was improved and it really purred with a straight pipe. Pete

Denmark | I bought a 4240 new in 1980. A year later the importer offered to retrofit all 4240´s sold here with a Garrett turbo, new pistons, sleeves connecting rods, pins and bearings to match the added power. The whole thing was offered because the tractors quickly got known for being extreme fuel hogs compared to other brands. The whole modification cost a modest 1800 USD. The pump settings were not altered, so the effect was noticeably higher tourque and lesser fuel consumption. After a few ears marketing Deere discontinued the 4240 and marketed the 4240S instead. It was the same tractor except for a MFWD front axle and factory installed turbo +not least an inline Bosch injection pump. This pump made a tremendous difference compared to the Roosa Master rotor pump on the original 4240. We still have the 4240. It is a very well built, reliable tractor almost trouble free. You just have to remember, that with the Quad range transmission a complete stand still is a must before shifting to reverse. I know several people who have spent a heap of money on trans repair after neglecting this. My experience is, that a turboed 4240 is a more fuel friendly and better lugging tractor than a straight 4240. No other differences, neither + nor -. Except for the still too high fuel use I am a big fan of our 4240. Feel free to communicate back if you need further info. Jorn

Statesville, NC | There are a lot of differences in the transmission and rear end between the 4240 and 4440. The differential is much heavier in the 4440. The 4240 with a turbo would probably be ok for light drawbar loads at higher speeds, or pto work; but not ok if you want to load it down with weights and pull heavier drawbar loads. "Removed by admin" was Removed by admin | the 4240 and 4440 466 engines aren't the same - 4240 motor has different pistons to up the compression and the rods aren't as beefy as a turbo motor. Unsure about the crankshaft. 4240 also uses a rotary roosa master pump instead of an inline bosch. don't know the intended use but like trent2520 mentioned, there are driveline parts that aren't as heavy also. jd

I have the 4240 that my dad bought new in 1978 and it now has about 4300 hrs. I put a 4430 turbo and manifold on a number of years ago. It works very well as it is not the big tractor. I had the pump redone as was mentioned it has the rosa master pump and it was not long lived. I planted with a 7000 16 rn planter with dry fertilizer for many years. It pulled it fine in the field but was tricky driving down the road. You had to be awake. The tractor is not that easy on fuel either with or without the turbo. We set this one at 135 pto hp. Probably would do it again, as it didn't cost that much. The biggest cost was to relocate the exhaust out the hood. I sure like it better than the 4430 that I used to have.

Fruita CO | I just finished doing a Quad-Range trans. in a 4240 that has been turbo'd for about 8000 hr...tore into it because it jumped out of D range. turns out it was a shifter cam that was made wrong from the factory. Got a look at the whole trans., & it was almost like new-no wear to speak of. Replaced the syncro disks & bearings on the top shaft just because it was out, other than that the trans. looks like it will go another 8K...this tractor pulls about 140HP, the pump is not turned up...at this altitude, all they do is smoke w/o the turbo. I've done about 5-6 4240's like this, & more 4230's then I can count...4440 turbo parts...No, it doesn't make a 4440 out of them, it just makes a good tractor out of a smokin' fuel hog...don't worry about the drive train, if you don't get crazy w/the pump, it won't hurt it. Yeah, some of the engine parts are different numbers than a 4440, but they will run w/a turbo...I've had to turn a couple of them up a little because they ran so lean they ran hot...absolutely zero smoke.... I've told this story so many times on here, I should just save it & repost it...along w/the breakaway couplers...
