NEMO | Can you verify the actual pin # on the tractor? I don't believe that the 50 series had the full 13 digit pin. I believe the full 13 digit pin started with the 55 series. A search of the last 6 digits will bring up a 4850 sold by dealer in Danville, IL in 1984 to a gentleman in Fairmount, IL. Currently shows dealer in Freeport, IL to be current owner since October of 2008. Cannot tell if the original owner had it for 24 years or if there is some missing info inbetween.

Central IL | I will try and do some checking but it may be a while. But an indivdual has it right now, not the dealer in Freeport. Sounds like it could be the right tractor though. Did it show the hours when the dealer in freeport had it?

SC Illinois | This site http://www.jensales.com/tractordata.aspx gives the year made and data on most tractors.

Central IL | that is pretty helpful, but I am more interested in knowing the history of the tractor, to try and verify the hours are right and any major repairs and things like that.

Elmira, Ontario | Even if the hours were listed on the machine history, I wouldn't trust them. Too often the delivery receipts are done by the dealer's accounting department based on information they have available at the time of transaction. In other words, sometimes they are guesses. On older tractors like that, telling Deere about ownership transfers was a real pain. It's easier now with direct computer links, but many dealers probably still only do the delivery receipts when it involves using Deere for floor-plan financing. Farmer to farmer, or through competitive dealers or auctions, won't get registered with Deere usually. Sometimes the service office will do it if the tractor is in for a major repair or something. In this particular case, it looks like the second dealer may have paid out the floorplan before they sold it, so the delivery receipt didn't get done when it finally got sold. We usually do it anyway, but some dealers probably don't. Usually the only repair history you will see is whether PIP's were done, and any warranty claims. In other words, you only see the stuff that Deere paid for. Bottom line, you can use the facts gathered by Deere for the machine history as a means of verifying someone's story, but it's not a primary source of data about the machine.

NEMO | There are no last reported hours posted when the dealer in Freeport had it. I'm sorry to say that about the only option you have is the "old fashioned way" and start by actual p/n # and current owner, get on the phone and start tracing back previous owners, asking for repair and hour history. You will be at their mercy as far as how good of records they kept, how much info they are willing to give and in some cases, owner may have passed, moved or no longer in buisness. Good luck in your search. I hope that you find the info that you are looking for. some times when a tach has been replaced the tech will scribe or write the previous hours on the back of the tach.
