Bourbon, Indiana | Where do you all buy your bolts, and nuts, and etc in bulk at? We put up a new shop this summer and built our own bolt bin, about 75 compartments, and would like to get em filled if I could. I know its gonna be salty but I'm sick and tired of going to town every time I need a little bolt or washer. Shoups don't offer them by the pound only peice by peice, I can't get a price from deere on there web site nor a price from fastenal. I"ll give them a visit next week probably to get prices and so on but am still looking grade 5 by the way. thanx Brad

Tractor Supply Co. and Ace Hardware sell'em by the pound here.

Birds Nest | Most all the equip dealers have a by the pound price on mix and match of bolts, nuts, etc. Most here are around 2.50/lb ~ Seems to be grade 5 stamping. Good luck so far. MW.

NW Oklahoma | Get ours from Lawson, probably not the cheapest but they come and fill it up and keep an eye on it for me.

NW Iowa | Filled my bolt bins again this spring cost about 3 dollars a pound from our local CaseIH dealer, don't take long to wrap up 450-600 bucks but it sure beats a bunch of trips to town. Our local John Deere dealer sells buy the bolt so thats not an option unless i'm fixing something green and getting the parts/bolts i need just to make sure i have it.

Embarrass WI | Our JD dealer has nuts and bolts by the pound. The way they advertised it when they switched over, I thought it was a JD-wide thing. Guess not! "Here", the local Fleet Farm has bolts by the pound, big bins of grade 2 and small boxes of grade 5. Can't recall the price/lb. True Value hardware store, too. You don't need to over-do the inventory, a half dozen of each size will get you through most repairs-if you have a project, you'll be going to town for other stuff anyway.

NW Iowa. / SW Arizona | I get mine at our local Bomgaars store but they aren't worth a hoot. I replaced my sweeps on my soil finisher last year & I ran out of the new JD lock washers so I just crabbed some out of my bolt bin (Bomgaars supply) & every one of them broke after putting the impact gun on them. I had to wait until I got back to Deere to get their good lock washer to finish the job. I have never asked but I'm 99.99% sure the Bomgaars bolts come from China. You get what you pay for.

Filled mine at the local Fastenal. Buying the quanity you need, they will deal. Not sure where you are loacted but check larger cities for mill supplies for industry. They will be cheaper than Fastenal and will deal on quanity. INDY

Markleville, Indiana | I will second Bolts and Nuts of Hancock County. Only thing is, I don't think they sell by the pound, only by the piece. I do believe the larger bolts are actually cheaper by the bolt at Hancock than at TSC by the pound though. Smaller bolts are probably a little more expensive by the bolt. Good thing is they have odd size bolts that you cant get at TSC. Seems John Deere likes to use bolts like 3 3/4" long instead of 3.5 or 4 inch long.

SE Michigan | If you buy a large amount you will get a discount. The details are in the front of their catalog or ask the clerk (who usually will have to ask the manager......who may also not know....) I think it was 10 or 15% if you buy more then 10lbs Bill

We use Bowman/Barnes, service rep will order/fill cabinets. Regardless, make sure you know the quality, lots of questionable ones out there. We use only grade 8 hardware, which is what you will need for any trucks. Can't justify stocking lesser grade bolts. Also look at metric.

Rochester, IN | We buy ours at North Central Agri-Power at Winamac, I would think that Plymouth would have them too.

West Texas | Our local farm/oil field supply store gives pretty good deals on large quantities. but here lately the quality has gone way down. Our Deere dealer parts man told he can beat whatever the farm store does. I'll be giving them a try.

Mid Michigan | I've got a lot of bulk bolts from TSC. We seem to use a lot of them. I always buy the grade 5 or even the 8. They have a pretty good selection and some good prices. If I can't get the exact lenght sometimes I have even cut them with a dremel tool or bandsaw to make custom ones. Sometimes I get them at our local hardware store too. Depends on what I need.

Brazilton KS | Only use lock washers when you want automatic bolt loosening.
They serve no purpose. Torque the nuts properly and they will stay tight. If you don't intend to tighten them, then use lock washers.

SW Saskatchewan | I used to subscribe to your belief about lock washers, but I have revised it in the case of bolts on Cultivator shovels. At least in the conditions I use a cultivator in, striking a rock can stretch the bolt and you no longer have a tight bolt. With a lock washer, you have what they used to call "a chinaman's chance" of remaining tight. JMHO

South Georgia | Heresy! You're immoral, and possibly unethical! Not use lock washers? 'Common knowledge' says always use a lock washer, else you'll be black-balled from society. Even if it's older than you are, reused forty-eight times already, and flatter than a flat washer, or, better yet, it actually did 'bite' once when the nut was loosened, and is now kinda oval shaped and spread open, lock washers must be used and reused! Yeah, that's me being a wise-acre. I hate lock washers. The rare one that actually does bite into the nut to hold it is worthwhile, but even then, it's a single-use item, and most of them won't bite. If it needs to stay, it needs lock-tight or a lock nut of some type. Adrian

When I can I skip the lock washers and use double nuts. Might not be as pretty but works for me. Edited by John SD 12/13/2009 10:59
