| Been looking for a JD 4850 for summerfallow. There is an estate sale not far from here with a 1985 8650. The sale bill says 8650 hours, but I am guessing that is misprint. I have no experiance with a 4 wheel drive tractor. Looking on the internet they are priced about the same as 4850s. Would that be a better way to go if the money is right? What would I look at when I am looking it over? TIA |

south east SD | Most all will tell you not to walk but RUN away. Hard to repair with big labor bill. Not a good design. |

39.48, -82.98 | I'll second that. I was glad to see ours go.

Belzoni, Mississippi | Well I feel like im the 8650 master on agtalk. It is the only tractor that I own. I plant, spray, and break with it. Let me say that an 8650 is a love hate kinda relationship. In my opinion, it is a pretty powerful little tractor. Mind you when i say little tractor. I call mine a big baby!!! You are not gonna be able to break ground fast. Keep it slow and turning on the end and it will handle just about anything you put to it. These other people are right, it is an expensive tractor to repair. Oh and after running it a few times, you might wanna invest in some good ear plugs. But all in all when mine is running its running great!! I have the 1985 model as well. Great traction and flotation with it are some other good points. Make sure it has the big engine in it and not the small 4840 engine. With this tractor you will learn to love it if you get it. Eventhough it gives me heartache and pain sometimes, i would never trade "Big Betty". Well i can go on for hours about that ole tractor but if you have any questions please let me know. |

N East Sask, Canada | 619 Engines give trouble, hinge pins, hi low shift, hard to get at repairs due to poor design. Two neighbors had lots of grief, one traded for a NH 9482. |

Amarillo,Texas | Well,if your not trying to farm half the county,it should serve you well.
Look at the hinge pins,if they are worn, you should be able to see a sag in it.

Michigan | do yourself a favor and just keep looking |

North Western Alberta | Get a Versatile 850, or there abouts. Easy to fix, best engine ever put in a tractor... and overall a decent old tractor. Made by farmers for farmers! |

| Our 8640 is a handy tractor but like everyone says repairs are expensive. Have been through the motor, transmision, and clutches all in the last 500 hours and now that we want to trade they wont even take it. Worth less than 15,000 because no one wants the risk of droping a 20,000 motor in it or some other big expense. |

ND | John Deere 8650 tractors any good? Where have you been? They are called boat anchors by John Deere techs and the only good thing about them is the tilt up hood. Buy a versatile, bread and butter tractors! |

West Union IA | Do we need to beat the dead horse again... LOL |
|
|
|
SW Saskatchewan | If it doesn't have a Cummins or Cat 6 inline 6, view it as an experimental unproven prototype and walk away. |

Illinois-Ontario | Old tractors of that 30-40-50 series had problems. They had a bad reputation for a reason. I had three of them back in the day. Replaced one motor and felt I got off easy. As others said, do yourself a favor and look for about anything else. It could be a costly boat anchor. |
