Glasgow, Ky | Would like to know the tare weights of semi's hauling grain. Wondering what truck/trailer combo allows you to haul the most bushels legally. Personally, I run a 95 Volvo 189 inch w/b with a 34 ft steel hopper bottom. Tare on it is a little over 27,000 lbs giving me a 53,000 lb load to gross 80,000 lbs. Would appreciate info from others in case I ever decide to upgrade.

| the best combo for net load of grain is a set of pups with single axle tractor. tare weight should run around 23-24,ooo and gross would be whatever state allows. nebraska allows 95,000 on such a combo. federal bridge formula allows 95,000 gross.. in your case with a 34 ft trailer I would guess your max gross is around 73,000 legal with a 34 ft trailer you probally got a inner bridge of 30 feet , bridge allows about 62,000 for that and you possiblely might get 11,000 on the front axle. so with a tare of 27k you can net about 46,000 legal | |||

Slicker than a Yes album. | The brown one is heavier, by 1K lbs or so. Both have C-12's, 13 speeds. Red one is on 22.5 rubber, smaller tanks, 10" less frame (240" vs 250"), alum frame connectors. Made to be lightweight. About 25K empty of fuel with 41' wilson. Trailer is half steel wheels and half aluminum. USA | How, Don't know how you can haul 80,000 lbs legal with your setup. Have an 04 International 8600, 165 in WB with a C12 Cat and 10 speed tranny pulling a 34 ft Jet aluminum trailer. EW is 22,650 without driver and 100 gal fuel. Legal gross is 74,500.

North Central Iowa | I've got a 1992 Mack CH613 daycab pulling a 2009 Jet 42' aluminum trailer. When I'm down to less than a quarter tank of fuel, I'm usually around 24,700#. I can't quite haul 1000 bushels of corn legally except in the fall when Iowa has the 10% exemption in effect (then I can haul more, but usually don't go over about 84000#). I agree with the other posts that you can't possibly be legal at 80,000# under the federal bridge law formula. If your state uses that be prepared for a hefty fine from the DOT if you're caught. I also have a 30' aluminum dump trailer that I used to haul corn with and I got stopped with 75 or 76000 on and can only legally bridge 73,500 with that outfit. The fine(s) cost most of the next load. Mike

USA | Denny, Don't know how much, haven't hauled any of this years crop to town. Trailer is an 09, have never hauled light TW across the scale on it before. Will find out this year, had some corn get down to 50 TW.

The Red(or Pink as some color blind folks call it) KW has a 370 hp 1450 torque C-10 Cat with a 10 speed and a wet kit, weighs in @24000 full of fuel with a 42-78-96 Timpte on 8 aluminums or @24400 with a 40-60-96 Trail King Dump with 4 steel and 4 aluminums. ![]() Brazilton KS | Our 210" FLD120 with 3176 and 42' Cornhusker weighed right at 25k...that was all steel..the trailer is on half aluminum now so it's maybe 500 lbs lighter. The same trailer on the 220" FLD120 with 3406B, 212" T600 with 3406E, or 160ish" Volvo with 855 all weigh about 27- 28k. The 38' Timpte or 35' Dorsey weigh about a a ton more then the husker and the 43' American weighs maybe 3000 more then the Husker. All the short trailers are on steel. The light FLD and the Volvo are steel. The long FLD is rear steel, front aluminum, and the T6 is all aluminum. A friend used to have a W9 and I think Husker trailer which would tare close to 20k. All singles, one small tank, aluminum frame, hubs, suspension parts, and maybe third member?? And he was still stuck on NTA's at that time. A lighter engine would have helped even more. He lost most of his fleet when they were all lined up in the yard and one caught on fire in the middle of the night. Edited by plowboy 12/3/2009 22:49

Windom, MN | My rig is a 1998 Freightliner with a 169 wb, 10 speed, 12.7 L Detroit, and a 2007 41 foot (I believe 66" sides) Wilson trailer. Can have 300 gallons of diesel, but never do. at about half a tank we're 25,000. Buddy's rig I run on occasion is a 2004 Freightliner Columbia with a 169 WB, 10 speed, ISM cummins, and a 2008 42? foot (I believe 72" sides) Jet aluminum trailer. Holds 140 gallons of diesel and completely full of fuel it weighs about 24,000. I like my friends because he can legally haul 1000 bushels of corn. I'm a little over 81,000 with 1000 bushels of corn. But it seems like I have to fill with fuel more with his truck. Probably because mine holds twice as much, even though I never fill it. I don't like the traps on his trailer as well, I have the strap openers, and they just seem easier to operate.

Aberdeen MS | With this Pete and '79 40' Cornhusker, tare is plus/minus 27K depending on fuel. I only run one 120 gal tank. With just a little air between the needle and E on the gauge my tare is about 26,400. Fill it full, I'm about 27,400. It has a 3406B Cat under the hood with a 13 over. When I first bought it, I bobtailed it across the scale. If I remember correctly (it was 9 yrs ago), 11,800 on the steer and 18,100 total tractor weight with me in the seat. I can legally scale 80K, but I can't remember how much leeway I actually have on the bridge lengths anymore. (Pete2.JPG) Attachments ---------------- Pete2.JPG (64KB - 1041 downloads)
