643 hi tin that is one of those-----"I wish I had a nickel for every bushel". It has been pushed since 1975, 8yrs ago I put the JD plastic snouts on. Light trash piles up in front of the feederhouse in front of the auger on certain hybrids, and some just plug eveything up. I do have a Johnson dust diverter on the feederhouse of the 9500, so "air" from the cyl shouldn't be a problem. Called the outer day about a new cross auger---only 8 in the US. Even though it has been going around in circles for 34 years, it is 13 13/16" diameter. I assume it started at 14".

Had some trasky corn that put me to 2.3 mph--------so it would feed. Called the dealer to price a new head-------ouch 606 for $37,000. Don't think so. He suggested a late model 693, for $15,000.

Story over.....What is the main difference between a 643 and a 693? I can't get a real answer. Is the angle different? Larger cross auger? Has anyone put a 16" cross auger in a 643?

Just don't tell me to go back to the 7700 to slow down.

Go to Calmer Corn Head site. His trash kit will eliminate the problems you are having ! I've got a 644 low tin I bought in 84 that I put the trash kit on & it works great. You can also grind the edge of your auger flat with a side face grinder.

If the trash is JUST piling up in front of the feederhouse it may be backfeeding from the cylinder. Backfeeding down the feederhouse may indicate your cylinder bars are worn. Been battling this all year. If you have the updated JD plastic snouts on (the hinge for the point is farther back than the metal ones) the biggest difference to a 693 would be adjustable plates, which can help with trash intake. I'm seriously considering calmer's parts too.......

I have a 643 too, way newer at 1980 model, though. I put Clarke Machine knife rolls, nose cones, and the poly snoots on it and plugging seems to have been eliminated. I have looked at the calmer slowdown of the chains, I really don't see how slowing them down will keep you running at 5 mph, maybe it will. All I know is these row units now pull about 1/4 the trash through the machine. that is a huge load off the chaffer. Might only be the case knive conversion. I can see no difference in the 90 series head, except they probably have all metric hardware.

the clarke poly snoots are great to work around. I like them having a complete metal frame to hold the plastic to.

Good luck..

I have a 643 with poly. We put split washers on cross auger about every 18" or so. Took care of trash problem in leafy hybrids. Cheap fix.

I also hammered 1/2" lock washers on my cross auger. After a while they would slide together (3 or 4 all bunched up). So I tack welded them. Amazing how well that cheap fix works.
I wonder if the "Grain Grabber" would help?

When running a 893 on our 9500, we installed a "wedge kit" to reduce the header angle. We also installed a larger sprocket on the cross auger to slow it down. Both helped move the trash into the machine, didn't reduce it, but it fed better. In trashy conditions we also flipped up the earsaver over the feeder house to aid feeding. We sold the kit when we switched to a 9660 STS.

To reduce the amount of trash, try Calmers slow down kit, it works for us. As long as your snapping rolls are in good condition, the slow down kit should help. Before you change to Calmer rolls or any other knife rolls you may have to replace the triple cluster gear in your gearboxes, we had to on our early 90 Series head.

If your auger spiral goes all the way to the center, remove all the rubber feed flaps and then put your gathering chains opposite from eachother instead of staggered. That worked here anyways.

Neat idea. Do you think that would work on the cross auger of a grain head? My auger is getting worn and beans don't want to feed as well.

I'm thinking the soybeans would wrap around.

My 643 auger has many years worth of lock washer scars. When I would get it in vines w/lock washers, carry a good knife.

Where did you get your wedge kit? I seen an ad for one of those somehwhere this fall and dont know where it was now and was just thinking the other day that might help with some of the short corn I have this year.

For grain head. I would go with "Grain Grabber 2" $30 each + $10 shipping. Easy & fast to install.
