Kansas | 96 Kawasaki 300 4x4. Slips in gear. Give it throttle and it will go but you can tell it's slipping horribly. Then when going into higher gears sometimes, mostly 5th, it will shift up and then promptly return right back to the gear I was in. Had a helluva time getting it to go into 5th today and stay there. Is there some sort of easy adjustment I can make myself? closest dealer is an hour away and not really wanting to haul it there if its a simple job I can do myself. Back in september the little one had her girlfriends out here to ride 4 wheelers for her birthday. Ever since then that clutch slips. I'm thinking the one lil girl was riding it around with her toe under the shifter and had it lifted part way up since the tranny is in neutral if the shifter is held in the up position with your toe. Appreciate some help with this. Thanks Rich

Southeastern Alberta | There's a little plastic cover held on with two screws right near your right foot. Two screws with jam nuts under it. Unfortunately, someone will have to take it from here, because I have no idea where they are supposed to be set!

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass! | Andy's got the location and I think you back the screw out, been too long, But what I really wanted to say is change the oil and filter. It will be full of bits of clutch plate. Not a basd job to change the clutch plates, I just can't remember the adjustment proceedure. Gramdaughter used to "forget" to downshift when she stopped frequently and destroyed a couple of the things, Grandma is worse.

Rich, I have a '93 and have to adjust cluch regularly. I will scan the procedure from the owners manual tonight. I think...once you have the cover off with the two little phillips screws you will see two jam nuts with flat head screw ends in them. I adjust the front most one. Loosen the jam nut and then turn the screw head one revolition clockwise. Then turn counterclockwise until it starts to feel tight. I have found it may take a time or two to get right is you have not done much before. Then tighten jam nut once screw is tight. It helps to put the wrench over the screw driver so the adjusting screw does not turn when tightening the jam nut. Hope this helps. I will scan and email too.

Ohio | Rich.....it is right off the right foot petal as mentioned above, 2 screws to remove the cover. Flat screw driver and a small adjustable wrench from there. Easy to do once youve done it. Then replace the oil/filter as well and its as good as new. Email me if you dont get the instructions, I'll see if I can dig out the manual from ours.

Rich, for future reference... Most kids, if they haven't been around 4-wheelers before, don't realize the importance of downshifting when needed. I'd almost bet a dollar to a donut hole that a lack of downshifting is what has affected your clutch.
Try and show them the difference between how it takes off right away, from a stop -- in low, as compared to how it hesitates badly (slips clutch) when taking off from a stop, in a higher gear. It'll only help you in the long run to give em a lesson now, otherwise as they get older/bigger, you'll be replacing burned up clutches everytime they want to go ridin'.
