North East Kansas
We need to replace the #50 chain that drives the clean grain on our 2577. Is the US made chain a lot better or does it just cost more. I know that there is a lot of stuff that the import is just as good or even better, but I don't think I have ever heard this about roller chain. This chain is under a lot of pressure in corn. It should probably be bigger chain in the first place. I would really appreciate any advice. I really need to order this today because the original chain is on is getting really bad.

Drives brand is what is on our JD, just replaced them all last year with same brand, very good chain. Purchased ours from local Case IH dealer.

I actually tested this last year on my 643 corn head (dry drive), I put a $10 per foot 60 heavy USA made drives brand chain on one side, and a $3 per foot 60 heavy China made TRP brand from Tractor Supply Co. At the end of the year and 600 acres later, the USA made chain had more wear in it than the China made brand.

For those not familar with how a 643 drives, it uses 2 driveshafts, and each driveshaft runs half of the header. We had the cheap chain on the side that drives the auger in addition to the 3 row units.

Needless to say, I was shocked!!!

My experience is just the opposite of Lance. Although his test is more scientific. I put some china chain on the rocktrap/reverser drive that wore out in 250 A. Drives chains usually go 1000.

Well... last year I went through 5 or 6 chains changes on one drive on my forage harvester. That included both chinese made Tsubaki and no name china crap. I'd had enough. I went to mother Deere. They sourced me some US Drives with Deere's name on the plates.
You know what? It did this season, cut more silage and the same piece is on there yet, never even adjusted after it went on. What's that say to you?
Says to me that I buy US Drives next time, FIRST. It was cheaper than the china crap too.

I use the China "crap" and have no problem. I tried some Diamond brand just out of curiosity and it didn't seem to be any better. Keep chain lube on them and you will be fine I think unless there are worse China brands than others. With the cost difference, I can put on 4 China chains to one US chain. Sure it's added maintenance if it comes to having to replace it more often, but I don't think US chain will last 4 times as long in my experience. I think you are just paying for added labor costs.

I put some china brand on our 1460 clean grain drive one time. Dad showed up and said hey dumb a$$ (in a little more kind of manner but meant the same thing) you forgot to put the master link on!!??? Got to lookin and low and behold that poor little slant eyed probably 8 year old... forgot to put one of the links in on one side of the chain. It must have been hot and humid friday at the chain building sweat shop.

I wont use anything but Drives or Diamond, have tried the china chain before on a round baler on the main drive chain on a 535 yrs ago, didnt even last one cutting. I will spend the money and put good chain on. Only places I still use china chain is real slow turning or low pull spots, otherwise doesnt seem to hold up for me.

I only use US chain on heady duty items. Ususally I get drives brand from shoup. I noticed on my rocktrap beater on the 1460. In poor conditons I couldn't go 100 acres on a chain with the china stuff, then I put US chain on and it lasted the whole season.

What more likely happened is that the link failed as they are known to do. I've seen them pull the ends off the links, right through BOTH pin holes. You just didn't find the pieces...

We don't raise corn, so rarely harvest any crop above 18% moisture. Put new China chain on the rock trap of the new to us last year 1480 which is still like new at 1-1/2 harvests. Elevator drive chains (usually China made, last 5-7 seasons,) BUT we oil all chains daily with chainsaw bar & chain oil. I suspect good lubrication makes a lot of difference.

In my experience, lubrication did not help. This trash was oiled every other hour or so with either bar oil or gear oil in hopes of keeping it cool/going.
It wasn't corn either. This was the cross auger drive chain in a Deere harvester, chopping haylage. There was an exensive thread about it, started by me, over a year ago...
It's also a high speed chain... but from what I've seen in other applications, even low speed chains don't stand up when they're subjected to high torque loads. Chain today from China is not meeting the OEM design requirements for the application where they used a chain to it's limit. It just doesn't work.

#50 is also motorcycle chain. I have used most every kind and the
stuff made in Japan was far the best but more expensive.

We had some Drives (i think) O-ring chain on the reverser/stone trap drive on one 2388. It made 3 seasons (500 hours) with occasional oiling . Even US Reynolds only goes 300. China lasts 50 to 200 depending on the quality of the roll it came off. We buy chain in rolls of 50 to 150 feet depending on size. Used to have very good luck with the Japanese made Tsubaki agri-tuff. Now it is Chinese mfg junk as well. Reynolds Red Leaf (offshore line) is garbage as well. If/when the Can $ goes to $1.10 or more we will likely order a few years worth of Drives or Diamond and try to get some O-ring as well.
O-ring on dirt bikes and ATV's is good for nearly 10X as long as Std if you use a good chain lube and keep it out of the sun.

They sure do. When you replace it 5 times at half the price of something good, it sure gets expensive...

I just replaced the return drive chain on my 1660 this fall with a new length of Reynolds (made in Germany) chain. I figured since the old chain had been on there since I bought the combine over ten years and 2000 hours ago it was time to replace. Seeing as the old Reynolds lasted that long without breaking I figured stick with what works. Its not cheap at $75 per ten foot roll but it seems to last well. Never have tried it on the reverser (rock beater) drive. I just replace that one every harvest as it is the chinese #60H and seems to wear pretty fast even with daily shots of chain lube.
I'm thinking I will replace the clean grain elevator chain next as it is also ten years or older.

Well, If you are planning on choosing a chinese one, people say it is not good.
Every one suggest John Deere. Now, I am thinking is it really the only option, like HKK Chain,
https://www.mrosupply.com/chain/roller-chain/2265641_rc050hpshl1_hkk...
or any other?
