Subject: Claas Jaguar 900 "NEED HELP QUICK!"

Texas

I bought a used Claas Jaguar 900 and tried chopping with it today.  It doesn't have a book and one is on order.

My problem is that the metal detector has it shut down and I don't know where to look or how to clear the detector to get started chopping again.

It was working fine today until this issue showed up.  NO, there isn't a fence post sticking out of the feed rolls!  I can't find wire or anything else but I don't know if something is on a magnet where I haven't looked.  I'm actually pretty stupid without a book.

If any of you guys that have experience on a Claas can help me, I sure do need it.

Another question....  how do you set the knife to shear bar clearance and how do you use the sharpener?

All information and comments about this machine are appreciated.  So far I'm really impressed with the critter.

Make sure your feedrolls are completely insulated from any other metal on the machine. To clear it you need to reverse feedrolls/header. It might take several tries.

I have tried several times reversing and it will clear the red light every time.  Then I start up again and it interupts immediately.  What am I looking for to insulate the feed rolls?  Are there poly inserts that are used for that?

If our 860 was parked outside when it rained and the upper front feedroll got wet, and we then sharpened, the filings would stick to the feedroll and the metal would go off. We had to take a rag and wipe the feedroll clear, turn it a bit by hand, wipe more, etc. etc.

Sometimes a small piece of metal can be wedged inbetween the pickup and feedroll housing that you can't see.

There's people on here that have that series machine that could expain how to sharpen. You will get an answer. I bet our older series will be different buttons to push.

The early ones are easier to work I think, does it have a turn knob for the number of sharpening cycles and another for the shearbar clearance? If so set the number of cycles turn the sharpening rocker switch on,then hold over centre until the green light comes on then it should start sharpening, when it finishes hold over centre again and the shearbar should adjust itself,if not count the flashes of the red light and read the book to what is wrong, then if you are like me you will throw the shearbar motors in the hedge and put the handles on and do it manually(-:

Does it set the metal detector off with the pickup off? Could be a bolt loose in side of bottom roller,a bearing away or maybe a bolt in bottom roller or wear strip on it that is very slightly magnetic, have the wear strips just been replaced? Possibly the magnetic coil inside is bad also, If you hit the bottom roller with a 6x2 with feedrollers stopped does the metal detector go off? Also check the sensor with 2 spade lugs above and behind the hydraulic reverser motor by the upper driveshaft these can come loose and it wont reset hope this is of some help.

Are you set up for corn or grass?   In corn there is a pan that goes under the bottom feed roll to keep the kernals in (at least in the smaller choppers) The bottom feed roll can drag the metal under there and then it can be fun to get back out and the detector will keep going off until you do.

First off, the book is very important. Everything you need to know is in there, somewhere. Surprising that it was misplaced.

We have a 2000 year 850. Some things have changed with different series's, so ours may be different than a 900. On ours, when the metal detector started tripping continually, there was a bearing getting loose on the front lower feedroll. This is where the magnet is, inside there.

Our first Claas, an 840, had trouble with the metal detector when it was brand new. That turned out to be that the bolts holding the wear strips on had become magnetized, probably from being tightened with an impact wrench. The dealer demagnetized the bolts by heating them in an oven, then we reinstalled them and tightened with a hand wrench only, no more problems.

The sharpening and shear bar setting has already been covered. The sharpener will not work if the stone is wore, determined by how many passes since the last time it was replaced and the counter reset. I usually leave the feedrolls running while I sharpen, that reduces the possibility of tripping the metal detector with grinding dust. Dealer said that more than once, someone has sharpened knives right away in the AM and then the metal would not reset-feedrolls with dew moisture on held enough filings to set off the metal alert.

Thanks to all for the replies.

There is also a turn knob for the shear bar setting that ramps up something.  How is that used or where do I set it?  Is that how I set the clearance desired before the machine goes through the automatic adjustment?

I'm set up for grass.  Should I remove the pan under the bottom roller?  The machine was last used in corn before I bought it.  Also should the sliding valve adjustment behind the side panel be set in the front hole or the back.  I searched this forum and discovered from another post that this changes the valve from a single to a two-way for the different heads.  It is currently in the front hole.

Subject: Filings from sharpening

I've always wondered where all the filings go from the autosharpening.  Theoretically I guess you could say they blow out.  Are you supposed to just blow some feed through and on the ground to clean out the system, or do they all end up in the feed?

Yep..... that metal detector is important. Im no help with your problem, but a freind got himself a JD chopper this year with a metal detector and he had the same issues you are having. The detector gave problems and would stop the feeding.I suggested to get it repaired. He suggested bypassing it because he said the computer board would have to be sent away since choppers like this in our area are rare and no one has parts or "knowhow".He said he would just unhooked it becasue he HAS TO go and GET DONE! People are waiting for him to come,!and he wasnt afraid of anything being in a corn feild.Well, it only took about ?80 or100 or so acres and he ran a short steel post with sign through the chopper and did plenty of damage, riped out some knives, banged up some sheet metal and cracked knife mountings on the rotor.......damaged shear bar......
What a shame.....

The shear bar adjustment is set where you want it. I usually set it pretty tight with new knives and shear bar and move it wider as the shear bar rounds off. Knob controls how much knocking before the shear bar motors reverse.

I would remove the pan under the feedroll. That is there to catch corn cobs, I think grass could wrap and cause a problem. We have never left it in for hay, we always change it when we change heads.

The hydraulic knob under the left side panel goes one way for hay and the other for corn, I don't recall offhand which way is which. I am pretty sure that if you leave it on the corn setting, your hay head float won't work. I know that if you leave it on the setting for the hay head, it won't lift the corn head. One of the knobs on the console is to set how much pressure the hay head has on the ground, another sets lower height limit.

A 900 should be a beast. Care to share how many hours it has and what the current market value was?

If you need to ask questions, I could give you mine and some other phone numbers of folks that have been running these for 10+ years. Drop me an email if you want, contact info is in my profile.

Subject: If you decide to manually set the shear bar with a wrench.....

Chilliwack BC

Sharpener chain broke this spring and it has to sharpen at least one pass to set the shear bar so we had to try to use a wrench and turn the motors manually. We had the cutterhead on and would turn one side a couple turns, then the other, then the other side some more............We found out why the motors start reversing as soon as the knock sensor goes off. Knives against the shear bar kept getting louder, and LOUDER, and LOUDER.  I couldn't spin the motors backward fast enough with a wrench and my brother had to run in and kill the engine.  We then backed it off until you could spin it by hand and were really carefull feeding it in forward again.

Be carefull if you can't sharpen and set the bar manually.  I think there's a part in the operators manual about this procedure.

Thanks to all.  This site is really amazing and valuable.

I took the head off this morning and found a small piece of wire in the pan.  Removed it and everything worked again.

I drove to the dealer this afternoon and they had a new book.  Yeah!  It was worth the 240 mile drive and now I have my bedtime reading provided.  I'm hoping to be an expert soon!

I'm sure I paid toooo much for this machine as I usually do.  Therefore it's toooo embarrassing to admit how foolish I've been.  Funny thing is that the dealer that had the book is the one that sold it new and he also wanted to know how much I paid for it.  I put on my "red face" and told him I couldn't let him know.

Past experience has shown me that whatever price is paid whether too high or ridiculously low, there is always someone that thinks it was a bad deal, and another thinks it was a steal.  One thing for sure, I'm not going to expose myself to the "trip to Walmart" by discussing the price with others as that becomes a loosing scenario for my joy & satisfaction.

If you're happy with the machine, you paid the right amount. A very wise man once told me

"You can't pay too much for good equipment, and you can't buy junk cheap enough"
