Helena, OK | Need some help from the experts, we have grown alot of 20-25 bpa soybeans as a double crop to wheat, but this year we have had really good rainfall and cooler weather, which is not the norm for Oklahoma. My question is what do you guys use as a seed per pound number to then figure bushels when figuring yield potential. Also what would you guys expect as an average seed count per plant? According to my numbers I have counted 555 seeds per plant and planted them around 105K per acre but I don't have near that many plants up, more like 40-50K. Using those numbers I get rediculous bpa numbers. TIA.

Ottawa, Ontario | Seeds per pound varies greatly from variety to variety, so go back to your seed tags to figure that out. 555 seeds per plant, with 3 seeds per pod would equal 185 pods per plant, which would be considered unrealistic. A 40 bushel crop would likely average 30-35 pods per plant, final pop. around 150,000, but really that is just a guess. Estimating soybean yields is easier when the yield is really low. It is easy to pick out the 10-15 bpa crops but once it gets over 40-45 bpa its anybody's guess.

Helena, OK | Thats what makes no sense to me I had 267 pods on this one plant averaging a little over 2 beans per pod. I'm use to the 30 pods per plant as well but with about half the population you mentioned. What I have in the field right now is a little freaky.

Ottawa, Ontario | Well then, you may be in for a wonderfull surprise when the crop passes over the scale... Here's hoping for a big yield !! Take a few pictures. I would love to see that.

Martinsville, Ohio | Send it to a lab like Ohio Seed and get a count. I know all the girls there and they give me the info I need. You have to know what you are dealing with. www.ohioseed.org Ed Edited by Ed Winkle 10/25/2009 00:59

SE ND | You can usually do better estimating yield by just looking and judging the field by eye. If you use a soybean yield "calculator" take the result you get in half and that should be pretty close...I've never found one to work
