Texas | I have seen a 5020 on the edge of town with a SG cab and it looks pretty cool. Does anyone have pics of other tractors that have had the "upgrade"?

Lenawee Co Michigan | A few months ago there was a picture posted of a 3020 with a Soundguard cab. Seemed to fit OK but I'm sure some modifications were necessary.

Texas | Thanks. I did a search and found both the 6030 and the 3020. It's fun to see what can be done and then dream a little!

Texas | That was fun to watch. It sure makes for a good-looking tractor. I'll bet a lot of by standers that night were drooling!

Texas | A beautiful tractor. Thanks for sharing your pictures. What a treat, I'm starting to dream some expensive dreams! Is it smarter to start with a late model, or does it matter? I have a 1966 4020 that I'm thinking about. It is in great mechanical condition, just not sure whether to use it or start with a late model 4020.

EC IN | Here's a 6030 that I am working on. Certainly far from finished and not painted yet. I am re-locating all of the controls over on the right side console and hooking up the tilt-steering from the cab. It's a lot more involved this way but well worth the extra effort. Texas | That's gonna be nice when you're done. I have a 6030 with the original cab that I would like to "upgrade". It is a fun tractor and simply needs some comfort improvement. Thanks for sharing your pics. I enjoyed seeing the interior too.

I have a question for any and all you guys about this. I have a sound gard cab I bought from the collage. They were teaching A/C and it was used as a demo for the class. It is all like new and came with all the original parts. We had in mind to install it on our 4320 that has the roll bar and canopy. Does any one know where to put the condenser for the A/C??? Thanks for all the pictures. If anyone ever does find these tractors or have another cab conversion please post lots of pic's. I also have a 4520 that needs a referb on its roll gard cab.

Texas | clevepreach - 8/5/2014 21:13 I never could figure out why JD didn't put a SG cab on them to start with. I agree. The first time I saw a 6030 with a cab I was confused because it was a 1976 model and I had no idea they were still producing the "roll-guard" cab. The new style knobs on the hydraulic controls caught my attention too.

clevepreach - 8/6/2014 04:13 I never could figure out why JD didn't put a SG cab on them to start with. more costs, same reason why there was no large frame 30 series with the new Hood!

I also have a 4520 that needs a referb on its roll gard cab. I am in the process of completing the A/C on my tractor now. See, with the old 'square' cabs like the Hinson, the condenser and evaporator are both in the top of the cab. Those were not very reliable. But modern systems have the condenser mounted in front of the radiator for more reliable air flow. So that is where I have mine mounted. On the 6030 there isn't a lot of room, just a small rectangle next to the fuel tank. But the condenser doesn't have to be a john deere tractor condenser. We are actually using one from a car that is the length and width we need. It is very thin too. Only about an inch thick so it's going to work out very well. The guy helping me has done several on 6030s and 7520s. As I recall on the 4620, there is an oil cooler and cylindrical hydraulic reservoir in front of the radiator, but I believe there would still be adequate room for the condenser. Even if you had to do some 're-arranging' of those components.

EC IN | clevepreach - 8/5/2014 11:13 I never could figure out why JD didn't put a SG cab on them to start with. I don't know either. It really makes no sense to me why they didn't. The only things I can come up with is either the cost would be prohibitive or possibly that they (meaning JD) didn't want that tractor to take sales away from the 4630. It is my belief that a cab like such would have been a slam dunk and actually help sales. I say this because if you have two 6030s parked side by side and one has a noisy square cab that was essentially retired in 1972 when 4020s and 4320s ended, and the other 6030 has the new soundguard cab that basically came right after the 6030 itself. I know which one I would pick. Just sayin..

EC IN | Funacres - 8/12/2014 12:58 Ohh, that is so pretty. These are the best pics of a conversion I have seen to date. Really cool to see the inside of the cab done right. Yes it is a 30 series cab. I painted it to resemble a 50 series cab. The 30 and 40 series cabs have too much green on them for my tastes. Then I used a 55 series 2-tone interior instead of boring black like it should have. The company that I get my interiors from can custom do the 30 and 40 series patterns in brown/tan if you prefer it. Lastly, I installed an air ride seat because I could not stand the mechanical suspension. I also replaced every piece of plastic in the cab, which included the dash panel, side console trim, kick panels, radio bezel, air louver panel, 50 series dome light, and ash tray. The transmission is still a syncro. All I did was break it out into two levers. Similar to a 7520. Another way to think about it is a quad range trans is simply a syncro with a 2-speed. So the outside lever selects PABCD and the inside lever selects HLR. It was a little more complicated using the quad levers because they throw a different ratio between the gears compared to the syncro, which is a perfect 1:1. In other words, if I took a syncro shifter and mounted it to the side like some of the 30 series had, it would have been a ton easier to hook up, but would have lost some of the coolness compared to seeing the quad shifter. EC IN | GREEN FARMER - 8/13/2014 10:52 What company do you get your cab kits from? I would like to replace my 4440 and 4640 with that. Do you use this tractor? I use Fehr Cab Co. I also think their patterns fit better than other suppliers I have used. Call and talk to Norma. You may want to have your cab s/n (from above the door) handy just in case. Sometimes they need that. I Originally built this tractor as a daily user. But now that I have it all painted up, I'm wondering if I should take it out and get it dirty or take a chance on putting scratches in it.
