edgerton ks.
Just set down tonight to order next years seed. Was wondering what some of your favorites were? We will plant around 5 acres this year. Start off with temptation aprox. 65 days, Excellent cold tolerance, sets ears fairly high for such an early corn, no picking dinky ears atdirt level with this one. Honey select aprox 79 days ,By far the best flavored corn i have eaten, families favorite and asked for by name from customers, an all yellow corn. Finally 0805, A bt bicolor corn. Rugged corn can take stress well for a sweetcorn. The most growerfriendly. 81 days ,very long ears that fill to the tip, good flavor and best of all NO worms. Any way those are my favorites just looking for any other varieties to try . Thanks frank.

Frank, here in AR. the tastiest we have ever grown was "INCREDIBLE" I think it is a pioneer variety, it is sogood you can eat it right off the stalk. Another good one here is "PEACHES & CREAM" ,I don't know what company it is from, we usually plant an acre in two seperate plantings about two weeks apart. We don't sell any, just for family and nieghbors. Highly recommend you try "INCREDIBLE" !!!!

Embarrass WI

We have had good corn from Bodacious and a variety called Ambrosia.

This last year we planted a bicolor variety called "Butter and Sugar". Never again, it was awful. Had a decent flavor for about 24 hours-went from not ready to overly chewy that fast.

Where can I find "Incredible", or "Honey Select"?

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
I agree with Keith. The xtra tenders are much better corn than average. Whatever you do, plant a variety that is an SH2. The SE corns will get chewy and starchy fast. 378 is a very good white corn. 78 day. 278 is the bi-color version. Bandit is a good yellow. We grow about 450 acres of the xtra tender varieties. They stay sweet in the fridge longer too.

Try the newer ones and you will give that up!

Here is a pretty good list of dealers, course farmers sometimes like a sweetcorn seed perk when they buy their other seeds but many of those dealers are not up to speed on sweet corn:

Incredible and Serendipidy. Our Pioneer rep gives us Incredible every year. It is very sweet but Serendipidy is even sweeter, maybe too sweet for my liking.

This is like asking what your favorite Tomato is.

We grow 50+ heirloom tomatoes varieties and sell them at a Farmer Market. So that question comes up all the time. I ask the customer what they are going to use the tomato for and what they like in a tomato. Then go from there, kind of like picking a wine.

With corn same thing. It makes a difference if you going to eat it the same day you pick it. Or it's for the freezer, Or it needs to hold for use in a few days. Once the ear is pulled from the stalk the sugars start to convert to starch.

The super-sweet corns have great favor for the taste buds. But, are not very filling. I can eat 4-5 ears of ambrosia and not get full. I eat one ear of Golden Bantam and can tell I've put something in my tummy. The salt and butter add most of the favor to it. Where as with Ambrosia I like it's favor with out salt and butter. Golden Bantam is 100+ year old open-pollinated sweet corn. We like it for the freezer mixed with Ambrosia. Favor and Filler in one package so to speak.

But as for what is MY favorite for favor it's Ambrosia. But, it's been around for a while. And I have not had any of the newer "sweets". So I'm out of touch. But, if I sell it a the Farmers Market customers come back asking if I have more. And there where two full time sweet-corn vendors at the market. I was just selling my extra corn.

Hey Dan where do you get your old Golden Bantam? I would like to stash some away in case of an economic crash. That way I could be assured of having good seed in the ensuing years by saving my own seed.Just in case,of course.Want to be prepared.
My two favorite tomatoes are Marglobe and Rutgers.Just the right size for canning. Open pollinated too.

For paste tomato we use "Cow's Teat". Really that's the name. It's a rare one. They are 4-6" long. They look just like an old Hereford's teat. Lot's of fun taking that one to the Farmers Market that's at the Dairy Farm on the NW side of Indianapolis. We also grow the "Peter Pepper" too.

Try Baker Creek for the "Golden Bantam" We've had good luck with them.

Thanks Ed, we scout ~ 10,000 acres of process and a couple thousand of fresh-market, luckily, I dont have to look at it due to allergies.... just get to reap the benefits. hav developed a good repore with a market on my way home from NJ, drop off fresh dug taters and give pest mgmt advice and get free sweetcorn.

Agree with you there, kind of, typically around here the processors go into corn after its past it's prime for fresh eating, since the processing can make up for it some how through blanching/freezing....but the hybrids they use are by far the best when they are at the prime fresh point... my favourite being BSS 5362 from Rogers, another good one is GSS 9299 although it does have a tendency to 'bearpaw'.

I like the xtra tender 277A. It seems to have the best flavor of all the XT's. It can be a REALLY tough pull, Mexican's don't like to pick it! Never tried the 278A. Rupp had one of their bi-colors that was even worse than 277A for picking.
