Humeston, IA | I'm going through my father's JD 100 chisel plow to try some chiseling this fall. It currently has spike points on it. The spacing between shanks is 14-1/4" (out from 12" - I moved everything to compensate for 2 broken shanks). Am considering putting 3" or 4" twisted points. What has been your experience? Which will turn more dirt and/or go deep? Thanks! |

NE Mo | My experience has been the twisted will not go in the ground like the spikes do, but they will move more dirt. HERE, I prefer the spikes. |

missouri | we have twisted except on the back row where we run striaght points |

Owings, Maryland 38.6856 N 76.6752 W | I would make my decision based on your goal,,,, what are you trying to achieve ???? If you have plenty of horse up front and want maximum disturbance,,,, then it is 4" twisted. Little short on horse, maybe you don't need all the disturbance,,,, 3" twisted. Going to put spikes on,,,,, leave it in the shed !!!!!! Overall I use 3" twisted,,, keep 'em rollin and they do plenty of plowing............. |

| Will a JD 100 have enough trip force to pull a 4"? |

EC North Dakota | Not sure the 100 chisel plow will have enough tension in the springs to hold with 4" twists. They were designed for soil savers and most of them have a much higher trip pressure than any chisel plow. 3" should work, you may have to slow down depending on HP in front to allow shanks to stay where they belong.
Just my 2 penny worth of advice. |

missouri | Does anyone pull a leveler or anything other attachments to smooth the ground for the next trip over? |

| Put a three bar harrow on it. |

Somewhere in North central Iowa | Personally, I think 4" would be too much. I'm not sure what you are doing with it but I have a similiar 3 pt. chisel I use for bean endrows and run spikes. I don't want or need to bury a lot of trash. If I did I would run a 3" twist. The spikes go deeper and pull easier not that hp is an issue for me.

North Central Ohio | was told spikes bury about 25 % 3in bury 60% 4in bury90% never pulled spikes but u can tell the 4in are on there.have a 9 shank levler on the backwith f c shovels it levels pretty good, one pass in the spring. |

Humeston, IA | FYI - the chisel has no trips, just standard shanks. That would probably preclude the 4" twisted points, I'm guessing... |

| There is two springs on each shank, correct? |
Humeston, IA | No springs. Are rigid, like in the picture: http://salesmanual.deere.com/sales/salesmanual/en_NA/primary_tillag...

S.E. South Dakota | With soild mounted shanks i would stay with straight points.I think you may bust shanks with twists. |
