Northampton County, PA | Hi all I know the uni system can pick corn, harvest grain, harvest different forages, and even blow snow, but are there other uses for this machine? I know thats a lot to ask from a machine that is already universal enough but I have seen multiple mounted with planters, and even the early MM with the baler and manure spreader, from what I gathered, they arent interchangable with the new idea equipment, but if so, is it possible that they can be rigged to do with same? What other ways of using these machines have any of you come across?

Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | New Idea purchased the Minneapolis Moline "Mule" and turned it into the Uni-System. Same idea but many changes and, no, the units would not interchange. There was also a combine, and maybe other units also. A Google search turns up several results on them: https://www.google.com/search?q=new+idea+uni+system&rlz=1C1CHBD_enUS...

![]() Chebanse, IL..... | We took a 708 power unit (cold-blooded Perkins diesel, hydrostat), modified it and added a 1000 gal tank and a 45' JD front fold boom. Actually it was a rear fold boom, but we were running it backwards. We ran it for several years until switching to a Hagie. I think we actually built it in '88. West Central Indiana | Several around here clean up ground piles of corn at the co-op elevators. They have a gathering head like a snow blower on the front and bring the corn in and on to a conveyor that's high enough for a semi to pull under. I used to haul for Cargill and have hauled a crap load of grain this way. Could load in about 2-3 minutes.

Wolcottville,Indiana | I seen a couple of uni systems with rock pickers made out of them, Rock rake in the lead to a turning drum that cleans the dirt out to a conveyor like ear corn to a hydraulic dump wagon, they could clean a field in no time.

What is a peat harvester? Peat moss? Or peat for potting soil? That is something not seen in Wisconsin

Wisconsin | Yes, peat is dried and used for potting soil, or burned for energy in some places, that's why they want to suck it up, to only get the driest stuff off the top of the deposit. It's basically the same stuff that the Irish dug and dried as "turf". Historically at least, there was Spagnum peat moss harvested in WI, that was the live plant raked up and dried. Peat moss can be thousands of years old plant matter, of all sorts.

I remember that story well. I thought it was ridiculous to put a bunch of hours on a new combine when a $10,000 tractor at that time would work just as well. The farmer even admitted in the story that NH would most likely not warranty the hydro because he used it for planting.

Manola,Ab, Ca | Yes it is used to harvest peat for sale. They work the top surface with harrows to loosen it and dry it out and then use vacuums to gather it and then dump in piles. It is then loaded onto walking floor trailers to be transported to plants that bag it and also make garden mix and potting soil. It’s actually a big business up here.

KY | farmerkj - 12/5/2024 08:56 Not a uni but I remember reading about this when I was a kid. Planting with his combine. Cannot for the life of me make any sense out of this one. Maybe someone else can make a case for the advantage here, but I sure can't find one.

Like I said above, I remember the story well. The farmer was bragging about not having to get a planter tractor and that the harvesting portion of the machines always wore out before the drive parts so he was maximizing efficiency. Plus he didn't have to look back to see the planter. I'm sure I remember it so well because I thought too it was the dumbest idea any farmer ever came up with. And yes it was a new or nearly new combine.

And yes it was a new or nearly new combine. You happen to recall if he used it for awhile? If he used it one season and then switched to a tractor I’d be satisfied that he wound up thinking it as senseless as the rest of us, but if he used it for a pretty good while, well that’d be downright interesting to me.
