Just told by my dealer that his corn would be going up. This is a national brand. His top corn will be priced over $400 retail. His least expensive varieties are around $315 per unit. The largest discount available is 13 percent. No volume, only cash discounts.

Time to find a different brand. Our yields are as good as anyone's that I talk to in our area and we pay 210 across the board for stacked corn. Will be going down slightly for 25

Yep. People are going to start learning real fast where to trim the fat. Blows my mind someone would even think about planting a $350 bag of seed. Lot better salesman than me that’s for sure.

I think farmers are finally fed up with egregiously high input prices & equipment prices. In my opinion, there is a lot of room to come down yet.

I will say that seed genetics and traits have improved more than a lot of our other inputs, everyone loves to bash seed prices. I heard a lot of guys say last year, they couldn't believe the yields they got for the weather they had, and seed improvement was the reason. My point seed is not the place to cut corners if it has the opportunity to cut yields.

So your justifying 280-300$ a bag corn in northern climates where average yield is 150-160 bu an acre? lol

You're correct that genetics & seed technology has contributed greatly to higher yields. However, I've planted countless brands of seed corn over the years. Every brand has 1-3 really great numbers for a certain geographical area. Some numbers are even the same thing, just sold in different brands. As a farmer, it pays to do a deep dive into things like production dates, lot numbers, re-plant policy, who owns what companies, etc. Shop around & make deals! Should be able to get good double stack corn under $200 per bag.

One would be better served if they spent more time focusing on performance and less time focusing on price. Most farmers are focused on the outside of the bag instead of what is inside the bag.

Seed prices are not going down appreciably. Farmers will end up buying the seed for what it's offered for after capitulating for awhile. Easiest way to save money is go NonGMO instead of paying for high priced easy button traits.

Yes. I did have record corn last year….on $40 an acre seed. Traits are not needed. And if managed correctly typically will put yield smartstax. There are challenges don’t get me wrong

So if a guy grows 200 bushel corn at $4…

Seed guys want 25% of the crop value
Chemical guys want 5%
Fertilizer 20%
JD wants 15%
Harvest trucker 5%
Landlord still wants his 33%

We’re already at 103% of the crop value, you can only insure for 85%, and that costs money too. Plus we haven’t paid all the help or drying bill yet. .

Tell the seed man if he can guarantee 300 bushel corn on that 200 bushel ground you’ll give him the $400, otherwise something has got to give.

Haven’t heard prices. I’ll talk seed after harvest. Would have to be cheaper then last year same corn I’d say. Which I think pry will be. Pay December before the first. Try to keep it simple. $280 fully loaded new corn should be the max I would pay for certain brands. Some I wouldn’t pay $200. All what works on your farm for the best price. Every acre is different. Some corn just don’t like some dirt some flourish it’s a funny thing that nature. Never hurts to price around either.

Pioneer has really improved some of their hybrids in the last 3 years. Was 100 % pioneer until 2010 ish. Started planting some dekalb then and steadily increased to 75 %dekalb. Pioneer is catching back and may soon be to 50/50 . In the 80s and 90s Pioneer made me more money than they cost in the 2010s.

I pay less than $100 bag, see enough corn yields every to know that spending more $ for seed corn won't pencil out year in and out.

Every time I try cheaper seed, it loses by 20-60 bpa. Yes, 60. By the time I figure out how much 6-12 bags cost me in yield loss, I'm so irritated I don't want to try any other seed for at least a few years.

Same here. I haven’t been able to make cheaper seed pencil out. Just last year, all dekalb was a new record on just about every farm. Cheaper seed was average at best on similar dirt. Doesn’t take too many bushels to be worth the extra dollars per acre.

The highest price I've seen so far for Dekalb is a SmartStax Pro 114-42Rib in N IL and C IA at $470 before discounts. Not that that's not mind numbing, but it's not $1,000. I suspect a few in central Illinois will be higher than that, but I haven't seen it, yet.

I did the same thing. Pretty much went away from them. Even on beans I haven’t been overly impressed. There enlist beans aren’t anything special. They dropped a couple good hybrids last year but still we’re getting beat by Dekalb and Channel. Instead of maybe 15 bushel off they were more like 5 or so last year.

Why doesn't everyone just not buy anything to send a point they are too high? I just added up cost at 200 average at 3.50 corn and i can pencil it profitable. 0-100-100 dry, 200 pounds of nh3, 32,000 population and $200 cash rent. Not including machinery cost, insurance and possibly fungicide

That is exactly how our farm is too, started planting conventional corn 5-6 years ago with one field because my brother was gun shy, we only ever planted traited corn. Now our farm is 2/3 conventional and it's our best yielding 4 of the last 5 years @ $170 a unit. Only reason we plant any traited corn is for plots for my seed dealership and keep thing simple in that field.

Your area (N 40% of MO) got sucked into the southern Iowa price zone for 2025. That will impact a lot of seed brands for Bayer traits.

Kyle,
We have built-in native resistance to insect pressure in our conventional hybrids.
Each Durayield product is non-GMO with elevated levels of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses that can occur during the growing season.
Durayield products:
Can be grown at lower plant populations per acre versus other products to achieve maximum yield.
Allow for more efficient use of available water and nutrients.
Have natural insect tolerance.
Have natural drought tolerance.
Have no market restrictions because these products are conventional.

Go to www.BASSHybrids.com and look at the hybrids in your maturity range.

If there is still some doubt, you could add CRW treatment to the seed.
