Subject: Are Michelin Tires Junk?

NE Iowa
I have these 18.4R38 Michelin Agribib tires on my Allis 7045. This tractor just runs a hay mower, rake, and a pull type sprayer. All easy work with no heavy pulling. The tires are about 10 yrs old, still 90% tread.

I run a lot of road time jumping between hay fields and the ride quality is good. But I've had this one fixed 3 times in the last year for splits in the sidewall. Tire guy keeps putting big patches on and a new tube each time. I run about 20 psi in them. No fluid in them.

Anyone else have these issues? What should I replace them with. This thing is too unreliable now.

This place has more problems with Michelin tires than I've seen on stuff we've sold in the 20 years since AGCO made them their preferred tire manufacturer.

Not sure why the difference. I have only ever seen 1 split sidewall in person, and have sold literally thousands of Michelin tires on equipment.

Not arguing it doesn't happen, since there's obviously lots of evidence, more wondering why I haven't seen it in 20 years

All the Michelin tires on my farm have come on machines I’ve bought used. To me it seems at 10-12 years old they start to fail like that one. I used to replace with Firestone, but they've sure gotten proud of their tires. My smaller tractors get bkt tires now.

I can't help but believe that tire mfgs have different quality levels. Michelin tires on one of our new cars were junk. Unbelted. Aftermarket Michelin were fine. 3 of our Rams came with Stones. All separated center of tread. The set Dad put on his truck by same model are running fine???? He had put those on about three weeks before we became suspicious of common belt failures.

The only Michelin tires I have been around are on application equipment and they have all cracked.

Mitas is what I put on when I can anymore. Trelleborg was another good one I used on the application equipment.

My opinion is that Michelins are about as good as it gets in Ag tires. We had been big Firestone fans for years. Bought a new small articulated planting/cart tractor in 2011. We put 4200 hours on that tractor and its original tires. When we traded it the dealer estimated that the tires ranged from about 20% to 40%. We never got more than 2000 to 3000 hours on Firestones. My guess is you got some bad tires. We never had sidewall issues even though most of our implements were heavy hitch loads. I would either go with Michelins or for that tractor I wouldn't be afraid of some of the new tire startups. I won't buy anything with Goodyear/Titan tires as they struggle with sidewalls.

Pic three looks like that tire has been driven a short ways with the bead broken from the rim? Not trying to be critical here, get it off the road etc, but wouldn't that wreck any sidewall not just Michelin?

I have zero experience with Michelin ag tires. Auto tires yes. Local tire guy recommended Mitas or Firestone on a similar sized tractor we have, went with Mitas radials and they have been good so far, 5th year using them. No heavy pulling but plenty of drawbar weight when transporting planter.

Yeah, I'm going to disagree as well. The Agribib was the premium tire, and for a long time, the only row crop tire Michelin offered. Now, today, there may be "better" options Michelin offers than the Agribib, or Agribib2, but they still have their place and purpose.

We run a lot of MegaXbib's on combines and have never failed one, and run Axiobibs, Omnibib, Multibib, and Agribib's on Versatile 4wd's and again, have never failed a sidewall. I think every single Versatile we have some since 2002 we have ordered with Michelin tires, and I know for certain we have specified Michelins on every AGCO product we have ordered since they made it their preferred vendor in 2003-2004, though they haven't always been able to provide them.

Around here, when ordering new we prefer Michelin, Trelleborg, BKT, Firestone...in that order. When replacing something on the lot, we will typically go BKT as they are a nice balance of performance vs price. Firestone depends on the day whether they are priced almost as high as Michelin and Trelleborg, or closer to BKT.

You are right, it does vary. 20 years ago you couldn't hardly find someone to sell Michelins in my area. We had a combine with goodyear duals. Sidewalls starting failing in second year of harvest. Goodyear rep offered 50% off a set of new tires which I though was a joke for something with a few hundred hours. So we went Firestone which had been our preferred brand. Honestly I think your local tire dealer has more impact on price and service than we think.

Michelins are good ag tires, they have a great internal design that puts a big footprint on the ground and pulls well to transfer power and seem to always ride comfortably at the right pressure.

The problem I see is that they do have a hard/dry rubber compound and do seem to weathercheck and crack earlier than they should if you're not wearing the tread down relatively quickly. Meaning a low road-use tractor that runs in conventional tillage seems to fail earlier than expected while it still has good tread because they crack, split and start to leak.

Other tires seem softer, wear faster on the tread and wear out earlier than a Michelin while not getting the traction or ride of a Michelin.

What makes the most sense depends on how you plan to use it and if you normally wear the tread off first or fail them due to age.

firestone has a lot maore problems than proud. New set on my 8320. Duals. Very expensive duals. 75 hours of planting {no-til} and they are shot with stubble damage. Dealer s trying to get an adjustment. Says they used to "pressure cure" and now do not. By the way these tires cured in my heated shop for months before used

In reply to running it off the bead: No, I'm not dumb enough to drive on a flat tire. I was in road gear going 20mph and by the time I felt the tractor leaning left and realized what was happening, I got pulled over to the edge of the road in maybe 200 feet. By then it was off the bead.

The tube was blown out right where a new sidewall split showed up. He also patched a third split while he was in there. Those splits did not happen in 200 ft.

What I'm saying is the sidewall failures are causing the flat tires, not from driving on them flat.

Interesting enough is so far it's just been the left tire. But the right one is showing some smaller cracks in same area. So definitely going to put couple new ones on.

Looking for opinions on what brands will hold up better than these did. Like I said light loads and lots of roading

+1. Mine were on motorhome tires. Been a few years, but they wouldn't do a thing about it. Less than 10K miles we blew all 6 tires on a Class A (think truck chassis) at one point or another.

If I was buying the tires I would hands down get Vredestein. Made in Holland, excellent quality and good price point.

Same consensus here. Especially with heavy 3 pt loads. Sidewalls don't hold. Run the psi for traction but cannot handle the weight and I NEVER found they outperformed anything else.

Yup, got a tractor that had Co-op tires on it..............split in the same area, no matter how many patches you put inside, they just kept eating the tubes. Worst part was they had great tread yet.

I have always been a Firestone guy but seems things have slid downhill with them................I got a tractor that is on slicks, and I mean it, previous owner used it on a TMR on concrete and wore the R-2's right down to the center ring on those rice tires. We just use it on a tub grinder and baler some so when I couldn't get anything during covid I held off, but it needs some and I don't know what to go with either. I have been buying some cheapo off brands for our beater cars here and have been getting better life out of those than more expensive brands I used to use, begining to wonder if I should try that approach with Ag Tires.

Replace with BKT. Much better value for money.
We've been all BKT for 17 years.
Michelin and Firestone are trading on their name only, nowadays.
Michelin are renowned to be weak in the sidewalls.
I've had brand new Firestones that split around the perimeter of the rim.

Only way you'll find a Michelin tire on my place is if they came on something I bought used. Hated the Michelin tires on pickups and I could never keep them from blowing out the sidewalls on the Michelin 11R22.5 drive tires on a used semi I bought. They just won't take the heavy loads from turning corners with the lift axle up. With that knowledge I never felt confident that their ag tires would hold up. I also know quite a few people who had to replace 50% plus tread Michelin tires due to side wall cracks.

For ag tires, Firestone or BKT on this farm. I liked the BFG Power Radial 80's when they were still available too.

In my experience, you will never wear out a Michelin tire, the sidewall will fail first. Doesn’t matter if it’s on a combine or tractor. With that said, we farm in beds and the tires have to flex quite a bit to fit the contour.

Very interesting thread. As I read through I was wondering if anyone was going to speak up for Goodyear. I have a set on the front of my 3255 that are 23 years old, tread is gone. I keep waiting for a sidewall to go before I replace them but I'm definitely missing the traction so I'm planning to replace them anyways. They are the Dyna Torque radials. I hope they are still good tires, I put a set of 20.8 x 42's on my 4455 last year, so far so good. Two years ago I wound up putting new tires all the way around on my 6430. Happened to go with Firestones on the front and BKT on the rear. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.

It really is interesting. I think there must be a lot of difference in tire pressure, location (excessive heat), tractor sits outside it's whole life etc. I also think the age or time of the failure has left a bad taste in people's mouth, but a failed tire brand may have happened 30 years ago but still the guy won't go back to that brand. For me, since I was a kid, my dad bought Firestone. For good reason. We have had several tractors that have come with different brands. My worst luck has been with Goodyear by far, but that has been over the course of at least 20 years. Any company worth their salt is going to make some crap, then make improvements. For me, I have had no issues with Michelin. Matter of fact, the best ag tires I've ever owned and just replaced the Goodyear on my 7720 all the way around with Michelin. Probably the largest Firestone ag/truck dealer in my area is now steering people away from Firestone and suggesting bkt so I put 4 bkt's on my backhoe. Who knows? All I can say is right now, I've never had a better ag tire for traction, wear and ride than Michelin.

Sidewall failure

And if you air ‘em up enough so the sidewalls don’t flex, you might as well buy some cheap bias tires.

I put a set of 800-32’s on a 1660. Had rep come out and weigh the machine, book said 20 psi, he recommended 22, which was 2 psi less than owner’s manual called for. They both blew out the side walls less than 2 seasons later, in the same field, one day apart. Michelin declined any warranty help, said I ran them under inflated even after I showed them the form the rep made the recommendation on.
