Subject: Sweet Corn Varieties???

Gilby,ND
Alot of people raise sweet corn and sell it, they use like peaches and cream and others but my question is if they had a sweeter corn that tasted better wouldn't they be better off. We plan t both bodacious and incredible, that's what our pioneer guy gives us and it has to be some of the best sweet corn. If i was in the business to profit off it, i would definitely plant them too. What your thoughts on varieties???

You are correct and those two varieties you listed I stopped growing over ten years ago. They just aren't sweet enough. Try Precious Gem or ask the Rupp seed rep what the current best sellers are. I have been growing and selling for over 20 years and the one thing you don't want to do is sell a bad one or any over mature ears.

Some of the best supersweets come from Illinois Foundation Seeds, but are marketed by others. I believe they "invented" the SH2 varieties. Some of the "hottest" varieties are the Extra Tender or Gourmet Sweet varieties, which are numbered. GS277A is my favorite. Rupp, Harris, Stokes, Rispen all carry them. A nice yellow that I really like is an SE called "Honey Select". I get my seed for that variety from Seedway. The Mirai varieties have been touted in the press lately. I have never tried any, may next season.

Blooming where I am planted!
I planted Peaches N Cream in this my first year of trying sweet corn.  Guess we have a shorter season here.  What are you favorite short-season/early bearing varieties?

Our Serendipity has been really good this year but for sweetness the Extra Tenders are hard to beat. We usually plant 272 (early) & 277 (late). One thing to remember with the Extra Tenders they are aush2s and it's they be planted seperate of the other sweetcorn & away from field corn.

The other thing we have found with the Extra Tenders is that they make a terrible freezer corn. We put some up one yr & ended up throeing it away. Tatsed like it had thawed then been frozen again. Had Serendipity in the same freezer & it was fine.

Dawn, some of the early season varieties I have tried up in Ohio: Temptation, 68 Day SE Bicolor, Geronimo, 68 day SE Bicolor, Northern Extra Sweet 70 day SH2 (Nice ears, didn't seem that sweet to me, tough kernals). Harris has a couple of good ones, called Sweet Breeds. I have tried the Sweet Chorus, 67 day and Sweet Rhythm, 74 day. Both are not to bad. Sweet Rhythm is planted by quite a few Amish for 1st or second slot. Has a nice ear.

We sell Silver King (white), Ambrosia (bicolor), and Incredible (yellow). All are sugar enhanced, 30 to 35% sugar content. Many of the folks that buy from us freeze the corn and request those three varieties. We do have some producers in the area that sell the triplesweets but I have been very pleased with the SE sweet corn and how well it sells.

We just put up a boatload of Honey Select! First time I ever had it. Liked it better than Incredible, Bodacious, or Illini Extrasweet! Gonna plant it in the garden next year

I have been planting Incredible for a long time. The last couple of years it has not been as good. It has smaller ears and tips not filled.

Is there anything better in an all yellow in the 80-85 day range for eating and also for freezing?

Seneca Spring, 67 day, is the best bi-color early corn that we have found.

Any of the IFSI Xtra Tender series... The next generation stuff such as 2170, 2171, 2573, 2673 are out of this world. Also grew an IFSI augmented Sh2 this year from Rispen called Sweet Surprise... making some huge ears... 9 x 2 3/4 that are incredibly sweet and tender.... Also grew 2573 and with enough moisture, proper spacing and enough nitrogen has done really well... Some of the best eating around. I eat more raw out of the field than I do cooked... Literally like candy.

I sell local farmers' market and roadside I have no issue offloading 100+ dozen @ premium prices in under 4 hours and that much again through-out the week off of the stand... week after week... I cannot count the number of times I've been told it is the best corn that person has ever eaten. I actually have people travel from out of state, 30 - 40 miles to buy from me.

Don't take me word on it... try one of the varieties next year... run you about $6/ 1000 + shipping from Siegers, Rupp, Rispen, Jordan...

Only negative is that it stinks for freezing. Unless you let it get over ripe and a bit "tough". Otherwise it turns to mush on your plate, especially if it is young.
