Ontario | I was looking through the offerings of big Deere tractors, (300 Hp or more) and see that the 8000 series tractors are mostly IVT transmissions. I would like to know how people feel about these transmissions, in regards to reliability in the long term, and why people would chose IVT over E23 transmissions. I have had some experience with IVT and I am on the fence about their endurance. I would like to hear what other people think about them. Thank you.

North Central Indiana | My opinion, for light applications such as grain cart, planter, sprayer, sidedressing, row crop cultivating, and light tillage, IVT is the ONLY way to go. I can put anyone in the tractor and it’s much easier to teach them. Heavy tillage where it’s puking it’s guts out all the time is for a Powershift.

We have 2 8r370s and ran agco cvts before and have no worries about them. Everyone loves them for no reason we would go back to a power shift. Limited experience with e23. We don’t run rippers but do everything else imaginable with these tractors.

Southern Missouri | You can’t get ivt on the “big “John Deere tractors, 410 and up no ivt

South-central Nebraska | I just traded my 8335R IVT with over 4000 hours for an E23. Never had any trouble with the IVT. I loved it planting and hated it for the big NH3 bar and strip tiller. Just seems so doggy in heavy draft loads. I’ve seen quite a few IVTs with 3000-4000 hours implode in our area.

NC IA | Something I never understood was that the bigger 8000s were only offered with IVT (8530, DPF generation 8360R). Did Deere believe this transmission was tougher than a powershift? IVT seems to shine in light duty loads or PTO work - I don't have a grain cart but I can see how it would be liked for loading a semi as you could just creep forward while running the engine fast for the PTO. We have a 8330 with powershift and 8430 with IVT. They seem to put the same power to the ground even though the 8430 is supposed have more engine power...the IVT seems to have more efficiency loss. But maybe its in my head. Edited by Mattchu60 1/12/2024 10:01

East Central, Nebraska | ive been looking for a 2 track deere tractor and landed on an 8320RT with 8000 hours. i was scared of the hours until i started seeing other tractors with much more hours on them. saw one with 18k on it. ran the serial numbers on a few in the 10k+ hours range and couldnt see where they had any transmission work done on them. these were all ivt's, it was almost difficult to find on with a power shift. i don't know why anyone would want a power shift after driving an ivt.

Panhandle of Ne. | We’ve put over 40k hours on tractors with the IVT pulling anything from a 10’ box blade smoothing up roads and around the shop up to 13 shank JD v-rippers with clod buster rolling drag behind it a foot deep, 45’ 980 FC with an Unverferth double rolling baskets, 8 bottom JD switch plow with drag and the list goes on and on. 310R to 8R370 and every model in between with no issues. If a person takes the time to learn how to use that transmission, they’ll never want our need anything else. Just like anything mechanical can and does break but sometimes it’s operator error.

Missouri | Millhouse - 1/12/2024 09:42 I’ve seen quite a few IVTs with 3000-4000 hours implode in our area. Same. I’ve had some neighbors spend a lot of money on IVT, John Deere picked up part and dealer ate some of a $50-60k bill on a 8360R, neighbor paid about a 1/3 iirc

SC WI | Maybe the HP exceeds what JD thinks the 16 sp powershift can handle? Same goes for the poster above, the IVT can only handle 370hp. I have one with the e23 and one with the 16 speed. Buddy has one with the IVT. There is a lot of settings on the e23, more than IVT to dial things in to the specific speed or function. There are times I just rather use manual mode. A huge argument for IVT/CVT is no wearable parts in the trans, however the IVT still fails.

Jackson County, AL | They have the EVT for the 410 now and lots of rumors its in a few 9Rs to test it in those sizes as well. I'm sure it'll have it's share of problems starting out but evidently they think its the future.

Carolinas | I was told that the IVT's manufactured prior to 2015 had potential issues. Some improvements made after 2015 supposedly made the IVT much more durable. Have seen two of the older pre-2015 7R series tractors with busted IVT's but later model 8R's have been solid. We like our 8370R with IVT and we do some heavy tillage with it.

north central nebraska | I have 2 2010 8345r tractors with over 6500 hours each. One did all of our disking with a 32 ft 650 Deere disk and field finished with a Deere 38 ft 726 mulch finisher and pulls a db 90 36 row planter. The other pulls a db 80 32 row planter. They both pull 1500 kinze grain carts all fall. Never had any issues with them.

Missouri river bottom south of Sioux City, IA | I kind of agree with you. My first JD tractor with IVT was 2012 8360R. Never had a problem in 2,500 hours and really like the way it performed compare to E23 speed. Currently running an 8RX 370 IVT with a 3pt sprayer and 1000 gallon side mount tanks. With the IVT tranny it works like a self-propelled sprayer. The 8RX 370 also pulls a 60 foot side dress bar in the spring and in the fall a set of 650 bushel wagons. Works great pulling them with the smooth acting transmission. I do pull a 12 shank Othman stirptill bar with 5 ton cart and the 8RX 370 is using most of its power to pull it. I was told the IVT takes more power to run then the E23 transmission and that’s why I have a 8RX 410. The 8RX 410 with E23 transmission is used on the planter and in the fall on the grain cart and pulling a 9 shank Case 875 disk ripper. The 8RX 410 actually replace a 9520RX. Tom N. Nebraska tests the 8430 puts out more drawbar hp but isn’t quite as fuel efficient as the 8330.

Moreauville LA | I will be the dissenter here on owning an IVT I had 3 8320R 8310R 7215R Followed maintenance, no scraper work or manure tanker work. Simply row crop work. Operated like they were designed The 8310R hydro failed at 3550 hrs, the 8320R hydro failed and 5800 hrs and the 7215R internally grenaded at 3820 hrs. I like running them. I hate owning them. Honestly I feel they are not meant to be a southern row crop tractor where there is heat, constant stop, back, turn, back, take off again as opposed to an open ground slow down to turn farming style. Heat is their enemy. Only way I would own another is under full warranty. In addition, here come the "mine has 11,000 hrs and no trouble" comments

Southern Missouri | Yep , but the website goes into pretty big detail about how it’s different than ivt , be interesting to run it beside the e23 and see how it pulls , regardless of this , they still won’t put that ivt of the smaller Deeres in the big Deeres
