SD | What damage occurs when the front axle bearing goes out on a JD 9000 series 4WD. Does it contaminate the hydraulic system or transmission? Does it lead to headaches down the road after being fixed? Does the rear axle bearings give issues as well? I appreciate any experiences that you can share. Thanks. | ||

Croswell, Michigan | I had a front bearing go out on my 9300 this spring. We had to replace some planetary gears on that side because the teeth got pretty scared up. My driver is pretty attentive and shut it down as soon as the seal started leaking. After the front was fixed , one of the back one were out of spec so we did those also. | ||

CENTRAL ILLINIOS | We had one out on a 9520 front last fall. Same deal as others - by the time the seal starts leaking the final drive is trashed. Mechanic took the other side apart and replaced the bearings but it was basically ok. He cleaned it up as well as he could inside but after we ran it a few hours the filter was restricted and had to replace it. He told me they always jack them up now and check for loose bearings during an inspection since they have had a few like ours. 6800 hours. We put over a hundred hours on it this spring and no other problems yet. | ||

SD | I guess my question would be, would you consider buying one of these machines with 6,000-7,000 hours if it just had the front axle bearings fixed, but the guy hasn’t put any hours on it since it was in the shop? I am not sure if this is a positive, because it has been just fixed, or a run away because of the unknown future of residual issues. | ||

Central ND | Define trashed? We have had several 20 series tractors, have had 4 seals fail over the years, took them apart, new bearings and seals and never touched anything again on any of them. Still running 1 of them several years later | ||

Roseglen, North Dakota | I wd say you're worrying needlessly. The filter restricter is very sensitive. Weve had a few bearings fail; fixed them andbdont ever recall the filter light coming on and no later hiccups. | ||

Milford, IL | Friend of mine was a JD service tech for years - still works as a repair tech but not ag. From memory I think he said 9000 series axle tolerance is .003 or three thousandths. To test put a dial indicator on the axle and jack up the tractor. This converstaion happened a long time ago so probably best to consult a tech manual. edited to add - agtalk poster '01htec' said in another thread the spec is 12 thousandths for a 9200. Croswell, Michigan | About 5000 hrs. What pissed me off about the whole thing was that I had a winter inspection done on the tractor. It was done in my shop. I walked by as the tech was jacking it up and I asked where was the dial indicator? He said we just jack it up and listen for a clunk. I doubt we put 20 hours on that tractor this spring before it went out. While it was at the dealer I said jack up the rear end and put a dial indicator on it. Sure enough one on the rear was out of spec. Had they done the inspection right the first time I still would have had the repair bill but probably not as many parts or the trucking to haul a dead horse to the dealer. | ||

SW Oklahoma | Had a front bearing go out on a 9200 at about 2500 hrs. Mine was always green lighted too The JD shop foreman told me after i got it fixed i might want to do the rear also. He said the oil flows from the pumps through the coolers both axles, valves blah, blah, blah. Fixed the front and traded it off | ||
