Subject: PTO shaft seal on a Case IH 5240

My 5240 is leaking oil from the PTO shaft. I am guessing there is a seal in there. Does the tractor have to be broken in half to replace this seal? Can it be done from the outside?
The leak has been getting worse lately.

Thanks
Hal

The whole back of the tractor has to come off with the 3pt arms. Need to replace some parts on a 5140 and was told it was not to bad of job. Dealer quoted about $900 to fix so it must come apart real easy. I assume you have a leak around the shaft. Looks like the seal around the coupler that the shaft slides into counld be changed from out side by digging the old one out.

We just had to put a new PTO seal in our 5250. Did it from the outside, neighbor did it for me, 15min later he was done. Who lnows yours may be more serious, but thats where ours was leaking also and that seal around the shaft solved it. Good luck

Was it leaking from inside the shaft housing where the pto shaft slides into?
