Subject: John Deere 9200 Hi-Lo Transmission issue

Was planting some double crop soybeans last night and noticed a problem with the transmission on the John Deere 9200 as I was finishing up. When I would go to shift into high it would take forever to go into high. Then it would slip out of hi occasionally. If I keep it in low it’s fine. Also noticed a hydraulic oil leak somewhere but I’m not sure if it’s related or not. The tractor has the 24 speed transmission.Any ideas?

I hope I'm wrong when I tell you this, but it more then likely is in the 2 speed clutch pack itself. If it is, it's bolted to the top front of the transmission and the cab has to be removed to access it and remove it. You pull the driveshaft and the clutch pack comes off from the front of the transmission. Again I hope I'm wrong but thats been my experience with them. Should be able to do a pressure test to verify a pressure drop in the clutch pack.

That’s what I’m afraid of. I will have to look into the clutch pack and try to pressure test it. Thanks for the reply.

No need to remove cab. I did mine and I'm a big guy (6'2, 265 lbs.). The two front cab bolts need removed and the cab tilted back slightly. Bell housing, clutch pack, and carrier come out as a unit but the clutch and carrier are lose and will fall out the back if tipped back so be careful there. The clutch, carrier, and housing can be reinalled in 3 seperate pieces, one at a time if i remember right. Make some long guide bolts for reinstallation of the bell housing. I ordered bolts from McMaster car and cut the heads off. The bell housing needs a special silicone when reinstalling. Dealer should carry it. It might be where your leak is coming from. Removing drive side tires makes it much easier. Mine was a 9400.

Taking the cab off isn't a big deal if you have a telehandler or hoist if it comes to that, we had it off our 9400 in an hour or so to reseal that front clutch housing

Correct, have done a 9100 same way.. long dowl pins when assembly... find out where leak is first and do hydraulic tests before assuming clutch/2 speed but highly likely

Thanks for all the Replies guys. I will look into the 2 speed clutch pack and do some testing and try to find the source of the hydraulic oil leak. Hopefully is nothing too serious but I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2 speed clutch pack is going out, the tractor does have almost 10k hrs on it.
