Would you use a field cultivator with spikes or something like a disk ripper if you wanted to tear up hayland that hasn't been turned in 30 years? I am wanting to go probably 12 to 16 inches deep.

Did that last year and then planted corn. Now it is needing to be leveled and loosened up.

If you are going to use a chisel it might be best to spray it with roundup first. Sod can be hard to kill.

East Central Nebraska
About 15 years ago, we took about 7 acres out of pasture and farmed it. It probably was in pasture for 40 years. I sprayed round-up and planted right in to it. Had to spray multiple times. Neighbor sold most his cows and turned a pasture back into row crop a couple years ago. He did the same and planted corn into it. Yielded good for him too. Why turn it?

Yep that’s how we rotate out our alfalfa. Once you plant corn in a killed alfalfa stand you won’t like planting in worked up ground again! It’s like driving on a carpet field, always our top yield too. Spray it off in the fall though before it goes dormant.

What size are your clods and are they still actively growing? If they are growing, twisted spikes are your best option to get them killed. If your spray program took care of the grass/alfalfa and you just need to size material/smooth it up; a soil finishing tool with discs, harrows/baskets and possibly sweeps if it’s really rough will do pretty well in one pass. If your only options are the tools you mentioned in the original post use your best judgment. Cultivator with sweeps will level mounds and fill in holes, disc ripper will size clods but won’t do as much leveling.

16" deep? A ripper is your only choice then.....why so deep? We broke some virgin sod, sprayed it, planted flowers, 1 trip with the protill last fall, 1 more this spring and it will be good to go. There isn't a field cultivator made that would go 16" deep

Maybe not what you want but back in early 70’s we used an IHC 12 ft Offset disk with 26 inch or bigger blades and at least 11 inch blade spacing and worked up a piece of ground with 3 foot tall orchard, brome and maybe even fescue, disked it 2 times and planted it to corn with an old 494 JD planter with double disk blades and sprayed it after planting, grew a great crop for those years.

Chisel plow one way, then perpendicular. Then hit it with the
A normal disk and then again at about 45°.

You get a perfectly smooth, beautiful seed bed that way.

Where are you at and what are you wanting to plant?

Neither of the 2 options you listed - you'll wear out the tool and beat yourself up trying to kill and break up the sod and it will will be a lump mess.
Spray and no-till this year. Whatever your preferred tillage method is next year.

30+ years agomI plowed about 10 ac of Virginia sod.,Plow left gig junks of sod so I quit after a couple rounds. I took a heavy disc a disc the sod. Discndidnt look like it did much but when I came back & plowed it there weren't anymore big junks of sod to deal with. I ran a cultimulcher over the plowed ground, came down like a garden. Planted corn into it & had a heck of a crop.

Roundup when fully leafed out. Right about mid July for the next year. Let the roots die and rot, and hit it with a vertical till before freezeup once or twice. Serrated disc machine that are set paraell to the direction of travel. Such as a Salford rts. The grasses might not be re growing by fall but the broadleafs will be coming along nicely.

I would get your lime and corrective P and K on, rip it deep, get it leveled and leave it after that. Lot of old OM to feed things and keep soil in place. It would have to be bad for me to do that as we 90% no till.

If you can wait, it levels much better after beans and another year for sod to break down is good. Hit it this fall with chisel, then field cultivator, disc, box scraper, whatever you need next spring.

Probably has a hardpan that the roots can't penetrate.

I'd bet a crisp $100 bill that if you dug a root pit in a hayfield that hasn't been tilled for the past 30 years you'll find roots deeper than 16".

If not, there's probably nothing down there that would be beneficial to corn or beans.

Then why on earth would he think he needs to dig down so deep? Pointless if it's not because of compaction IMO.

Plow just leaves big chunks to work down here.
If it is rough and needs tilled the best I ever had was a Bush hog disc. It took a lot up front to pull it in sod. It had 24 inch blades and would go to the spools first pass. Later passes were shallower to break up clods and smooth more.
The one I had had a harrow on the back. It took about 4 passes to get worked down. By then it was so dry nothing would grow.
My thought for going that deep is to level out cow paths etc.
If it is smooth just spray and go. Graze or mow it off, give it a bit to recover and spray.

There was a lot of sod that folks around here started farming no till 10-20 years ago in NCKS. It is truly sad to see the difference in yield (corn, beans, wheat and milo) between this ground and adjoining ground farmed sodbuster style for a hundred years and now no till. The top soil is simply gone.

Hay is a part of our no-till, row crop rotation. Usually works like this; no till corn into burned down hay fields year one, no till drilled beans year two at which time there’s nearly no trace of sod and year three no till drill new hay into bean stubble. Sometimes on newly rented ground we use two years of corn then beans to clean up stubborn weeds. If the field is too rough after beans we will disk and field cultivate light enough to level then plant hay.

Field cultivator and 12 to 16 inches deep do not physically go together. I think your answering your own question. Disc ripper, inline/v ripper, maybe a heavy chisel or one of those heavy disks- Rome, wishek etc

Moldboard plow, 1 pass with plow and a couple finish passes and you have a nice clean smooth field,.

Anything else and you will be making many more trips and end up rough
