Yamhill county, Oregon | Been looking at picking up a ford 8700 tractor to have around. Going to go look at it in person in a few days. Mostly to use for running an auger, pulling around hard hose irrigation reels, maybe some mowing with a 14' batwing. Never been around ford tractors, been around plenty of ford trucks and pickups. Anything specific I should be wary of, or avoid? It's a 2 wheel drive with a cab, plenty of hours, but has had some engine work, not sure exactly what was worked on. Thanks for your input.

NE WI | We have 12000 hours on one dad bought new. Engine valve train gone through at 6500 hours and rings went at 6800 hours. New hydraulic pump at 11000 hours. Was used in winter to haul manure so lots of cold starts probably didnt help. Also had a loader on it so a few clutches as well. Last clutch job needed a new flywheel as it was at minimum spec. Early on the PTO drive shaft splines stripped and was replaced with an updated version. Required a double split to replace the shaft. PTO break band is weak area as well. If PTO spins when cold the break band is probably broke. Requires a double split to fix that. Engine can cavitate a pinhole in cylinder area so keep the additives in check in the coolant. Injector pump has its own sump. Change it every time you change oil with 15-40W. If it’s diesel logged plungers probably need work in pump. We replaced the hydraulic couplers on the back to quick connect vs the lever style as they were shot. Dual power has been rock solid. Make sure it doesn’t hesitate when shifting the dual power. Rear brakes, axle bearing, and seals were done somewhere between 8-10k hours. Couple of sets of steering ball joints along the way as well. Got new paint and an air ride seat. It’s our main planting and spraying tractor. (48E201DD-EF4A-4ADC-AB38-98AB682F6AA1 (full).jpeg) (AFC8B39F-C6C2-469D-8C53-2E7FF701ADCE (full).jpeg) Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]()

We have always had blue tractors. They are pretty tough. We have a 8700 with a loader. Its moved ALOT of hay and straw. Just rolled over 10k hrs a few months ago. Its had 1 clutch, a injection pump rebuild around 9500 hrs and several ac compressors. It burns no oil and always cranks up. I dont think you can go wrong with a 8700 or 9700. They are a tremendous improvement over the 8600/9600 series in my opinion. (Screenshot_20230406-084506_Photos (full).jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

North Mississippi Delta / Alabama Gulf Coast | I think the old Fords are the best looking farm tractor ever built, just my opinion. Reminds me of the good old days before machines needed computers.

Gap,PA | We had one that grandpa bought back in the late 70s when it was a year or two old. Engine was overhauled at about 5,000 hours and needed work again at about 9500 hours. We sent it to Forrester farm equipment in Chambersburg PA and they put a brand new 7.5 liter genesis engine in it. Really woke it up. No more hard starting in the winter. Did a clutch once around 10,000 hours and the PTO around 10,500 hours. The last years it was basically on stationary power unit duty. At some point it got 20.8-38 rear tires and it leveled it out nicely. Sold it a year ago for close to what grandpa paid for it 45+ years before.

Why would you need to double-split the tractor to work on the PTO components? Aren't those all accessible by rolling the rear end housing out from under the tractor?

I agree. I think the 8000/9000 are cool looking. Definitely a muscle tractor. The series 2 cabs and the 30 series cabs are nice. I think they are as pretty as they come.
