In years past, I've had a few workers mistake motor with hydraulic or vice versa. (usually in unmarked jug) I talked to my oil provider 5 years ago and he said they could put dye in the hydraulic oil, That worked great, no more confusion. This year the new guy said we're out of dye and you and one other guy are the only ones that use it.
Does anyone else color code their oils?

I have never even heard of it until now. I hound our guys pretty hard about not taking much more oil than they need and making dang sure the jugs are marked

I added red dye to the hydraulic oil in my JD 4450.  Makes it easier to see on the dipstick.

Had a JD tractor with red oil when I looked at it. Figured it wasn't JD, Dealer gave me a bottle of JD dye because it made it MUCH easier to see in the sight glass. Couldn't get any for last 3 years. I buy a jug of hydralic or oil from dealer whenever the lables start coming off the jugs I reuse. Dad used to only use 1 gal for engine oil and only 2 1/2 gal for hydralic

No. But make double damn sure ALL jugs are labelled. No reason not to. Ear tags work great. Had a good friend that had his hired guy dump straight Roundup in a tractor hydraulic system. It wasn't pretty.

Somebody put red fuel in an elc coolant jug. That was an afternoon wasted cleaning out the overflow tank on sprayer.

Yes have used Cenex dyed hyd for years. We also spray paint our 2.5 jugs, one color for engine and one color for
Hyd, for easier and quicker ID.

Yes, CAT has die that you can buy. Haven’t had trouble getting it. Makes it easy to read on sight gauges and dipsticks.

The MFA hydraulic oil I used for years had a dark purple dye in it. JD and other implement dealers would see it and say you had bad and dirty oil in tractors even though the oil was fine and met specs. When MFA came out with their updated oil to meet current specs they chose to leave the dye out. I got a couple small bottles of blue dye from them. If I would have had any idea what they were going to charge for them would have checked somewhere else. Just adding to a 55 gal barrel you need a way to mix. I ended up pumping oil from the pump back in the barrel. Not near as dark as the old product though.

Yes, we have bought a number of new Deere tractors over the years. First one in '97, last one in '14. The last one was a compact tractor. The others were row crop tractors. Every one of them had the hydraulic oil dyed red from the factory.

I use the color zip tie method. We run case ih so red zip tie is hytran only jug. Blue zip tie is 15w-40 motor oil only. Labels and markers won't stay on oily jugs.

Yes we have blue dye in our hyd oil. Best thing ever. You can put different color zip ties on each jug, write whatever on the jug or any other way to differentiate between them but one look at blue oil is pretty easy to tell them apart.

I assume the dye product itself is safe for the modern hydraulic system?

Bobcat now has blue hyd oil for northern climates and red hyd oil for southern. Kinda weird to see blue oil, but it'll be easy to identify. Just don't put it in the washer fluid reservoir!!

I put fluorescent dye in our hydraulic oil to make chasing out leaks in our excavators/dozers easier. The mini excavator has a true snarkle of lines under the operator station and it can be a real bugger figuring out which line is leaking this time. The dye makes it much easier to diagnose.

Not an answer to your application, but same principle applies.
