Subject: Extendable wagon tongue

Heyworth, IL.
Looking to make my hay feeder wagon tongue telescoping and latchable. Looking for DIY ideas/pics. Not having any luck searching online. Thanks

This is the design that Deere used on wagons that works quite well.

The bottom of the telescoping tongue is open so that part #13 catches the end and you cannot pull the tongue out of the tube should the latch release.  I had some latches like #6 bent and then welded a 2" of 5/8x1-1/2 flat for the latch to catch on.  I bought the spring #7 from Deere.  I measured the parts I had on a wagon.

IIRC the outer tube is 4x4x3/16 wall and the inner slide is 3-1/2x3-1/2x3/16.  I used a reach I had from a wagon I had lengthened for the inner tongue but could easily have used a square tube and cut a slot for the emergency stop.

I've made 3 so far. Copied a Kory for the most part. Easy to make and they work well. I'll look for pictures on my computer in the morning.

Bought a complete unverferth extending hitch a few years ago for a John Deere running gear, had to drill out wagon side just a touch for it to fit, if I remember it wasn’t crazy expensive

It looks like the latch assembly ($78) is cheaper than the latch ($92) itself.

Buy the rear hitch, telescoping hitch, latch assembly, and stop block for $517 and provide a 3/4" pin and a couple 5/8x1-1/4 bolts  or complete assembly for $868.

I never looked much at the Unverferth wagons, but they appear to be very similar to the Deere 1065/1075/740 wagons.

I found my pics and uploaded a video that will be available at 11 am. Simple and easy to make. Rectangle tubing, channel iron, flat iron, and a few odds and ends. They can't be pulled out.
