Ludington/Manistee MI area | Why are hammer straps more prevalent on larger equipment? How I look at it is with a hammer strap you basically have a clevis on your drawbar instead of the implement side. IMO same components just opposite orientation. Both my field cultivator and soil saver have the flip over style hitch that accommodate either. My disc started life with a hammer strap but neighbor who is a good welder remedied that. Only thing I use the hammer strap on is my no til drill and planter and I’ve thought of seeing if I could replace them.

scmn | Hammerstrap raises the safety clip and lowest point on machine. Everything on the rear of the tractor is placed relative to PTO.

Wisconsin | You're more likely to have a proper fit on the pin when it matches the tractor than when it has to match the implement. And the proper fit of the pin is more important the bigger the equipment.

Most of our bigger equipment that needs a hammer strap on the tractor has a heavier hitch / piece of steel that sits on the drawbar and takes the heavy weight . Also tends to come into the hammer strap more level , pin is tight in drawbar and not wearing it . Lighter equipment the hammer strap on the equipment often has a hinge built into it , doesn’t sit level on drawbar, pin is crooked, wearing on the hole more . Seems like every time switch equipment, never have the right hitch . Hammer strap or not / 2 or 3 point , 540 or 1000 .

I just like it better with the hammer strap on the tractor.

The hammer strap is a pita. Put it on when using couple tools. Then have to remove it for other implements .

SW Ohio | I'm down to just one tool that doesn't require the hammerstrap. If I used it more I'd come up with another hitch for it, but it only gets used once a year for 50 acres so I deal with it for now. I've also considered building a plate to install in the hammerstrap hitch quickly that would make it a straight drawbar again. I saw the idea on here but I can't remember the thread. If you look at the hammerstraps on drawbars vs. the ones on equipment, the drawbar ones are considerably heavier duty

north central nebraska | It saves wear on tractor drawbar. Your one tractor pulls all kinds of implements . So it's also cheaper to have a straight hitch on all your implements. If all tractors pulled only one implement then it wouldn't matter which one had the hammerstrap.

Here is a picture of one I saw on here. I haven’t taken the time to make one yet. (E161B767-8FF2-40FC-8DB1-0FA55729BF9F (full).jpeg) Attachments ---------------- E161B767-8FF2-40FC-8DB1-0FA55729BF9F (full).jpeg (163KB - 17 downloads)

This the pintle/hammer strap style tend to be rigid on the implement end and take the weight better. The mostly older clevis style is often hinged and a pain to hook up and wear pins and drawbars more. We have several of both and since the clevis hitches are hinged we just use a long pin and leave the hammer strap on the tractor.

East Central Missouri | You must be in a very flat area.

North Central OH | The clevis hitches are hinged, they can still flex, but we don't have any extreme hills either.
