Can anyone go into detail on some of the main differences between the 30 series and 40 series John Deere’s. For example a 4230 compared to a 4240.

Northeast Nebraska and Candelaria Philippines | Better seat and aircon
Buster 50 |

North West IA/western AZ | 466 engine

SW Indiana | Hydracushion seat is the biggest thing that comes to mind. A/C seems to work better in 40 series, not sure if it's a bigger condenser? 30 series could have syncro transmission or quad range vs 40 series quad or powershift. 404 cu in vs 466 cu in and 10 gallons more fuel in a 40

P.S. was available on the 30 series

SW Indiana | Yep you're correct, I missed that

Coles County, Illinois | Except for the 4040 which was basically a 4230 with a updated cab and injection pump, the 40 series had better main bearings, higher 3 pt hitch capacity, larger fuel tanks and improved cooling.

South Central ND | Extra lights. Better starting engine with Bosch pump no aneroid. I always found that 40 series cabs were tighter, quieter.
Badger |
| ||
Huntley Montana | Both had 8 speed power shift available .
Jorn |

Denmark | The 4240 had a Roosa Master pump. The later model, the 4240S, had a Bosch pump. Almost unbeliveable improvement.

Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | Badger - 8/30/2022 23:46 Both had 8 speed power shift available . Compared to the IH 400 series engine, they were fuel hogs with a turbo also.

Nw Iowa | 40 series always started better. More solid tractor overall.
Trent2520 |

Statesville, NC | 40 series could have synchro-range transmission.

Forty series added a hydraulic reservoir up front by the hydraulic pump.

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I agree. Dad had a 4230. Later he traded it for a 4440. That was a great improvement. I'd try to get a 4440 instead.

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | The “Iron Horse” series. “More horses. More iron” was the advertising slogan.

ne iowa | Much better differential in late 40 series.

Bremen, KS | Interestingly, the manual that came with my 4450 also mentions the Synchrorange as being available in that series as well. Must've been some made but I've not seen one.

40 series had a lot of little updates to them, most of them already mentioned. In my opinion a 4240 would be the one to buy definitely. I know how things work in the real world though, the 30 series received several updates mid production run. If you were to buy a 4230 I would try to find a late production one.

ND | Having a 4430 & a 4640 the Quad is much better in the 40 series, 40's start better , & chassis is beefier. I would however want a turbo vs none in these two models. Not sure what it would cost but getting the 4240 & adding a turbo would help & give you a good edge. Back in the early days farmers added a turbo to a 4010 but that was a stretch but too light a frame.

If you are still tractor shopping the best, and probably cheapest way is to buy a tractor with one. In other words buy a 4440, since I am spending your money buy a 4450. All the green ones like fuel. If you can live with no 540 PTO a 4840 is the best bang for the buck. One does not have to run it wide open. Edited by IADAVE 8/31/2022 09:53

Saline County, Mo | I think a synchro was available in those as well. At least it was on a 4040

Latimer, Iowa (north central) | I will go against the usual recommendations a say a 4630, if don’t need the 540 pto, is the Best Buy in soundgaurd tractors. Nice ones will sell for half of a 4440 and definitely not enough differences to justify a paying twice as much. Have had good luck with the powershifts. Make a heck of a manure pump and batwing tractor for the price. 4840s are fine but not as nimble as a 4630.

Southern MN | One thing that hasn’t been mentioned yet is 3pt capacity. Believe the 40 series will lift over a 1000 lbs more than it 30 series counterpart. Never thought much about the seat difference until I cultivated in both a 4430 and a 4440 for a couple days each a few years ago. Sold my 4430 for that reason, couldn’t stand a full day in it with my back issues.

Sunburst Montana | Mark (EC,IN) - 8/31/2022 05:13 Badger - 8/30/2022 23:46 Both had 8 speed power shift available . Compared to the IH 400 series engine, they were fuel hogs with a turbo also. True but that doesn’t make up for the rest of the tractor:)

South Texas | I think they went to Mexico. They also got 86 series IH with no TA.
