Recently upgraded my daily driver to a new GMC 2500 and now faced with the decision about what to do for a toolbox. I am not endowed with the longest of legs so thinking the conventional across the bed toolbox is not a great option although there are models out there with a built-in ladder. Been considering the over the fender well type toolboxes that are accessible from the rear of the pickup. Since I have never had these am curious if those of you that have tried them how well they worked and what brands seem the best. I realize these boxes won't have as much storage as the conventional toolboxes but may be more practical. Thanks in advance.

Central ND | Do you use the floor for pallets etc? Those full length sliders are pretty cool

I like the idea of those but not practical for this truck with a fifth wheel ball.

Southern Indiana | I went with a chest style weather guard in my new truck. I also have a cross style in my half ton. Either one I have to get in the bed to get anything out. I went with the chest style in my new truck for 2 important reasons. 1. The chest style eliminates space under the tool box from being a trap for small things and debris. 2. With the chest style I can still use my bed camera to hook up my gooseneck.

east central wi | Put running boards on that go to the rear wheel. they make a nice step to access the tool box.

rochester IN | Not a very good picture. But I just put this together last week the idea works well for what I wanted. Just needs refined a bit and has been some since the pictures. Basically took garage door track mounted it just above the fender wheels and built a tray that will slide front to back. Allows for the use of the gooseneck could really mount any kind of box on it. Kinda of still a work in progress. (E576896E-1851-4D67-A12D-3CC5375DF6ED (full).jpeg) Attachments ---------------- E576896E-1851-4D67-A12D-3CC5375DF6ED (full).jpeg (154KB - 7 downloads)

north central Kansas | I've got one of the rear 5-drawer fender-well type boxes. It's narrow enough pallets go by it if you're careful. I like that the tools are available at ground level with the tailgate down. It holds a reasonable amount of tools, but not other things like ratchet straps, jumper cables, jacks...things you might put in a large cross-bed type toolbox. I bought a cheaper one from Tractor Supply to test out the concept. It's lasted 3-4 years but it's starting to get pretty flimsy with rough treatment. I've considered a longer one accessible from the top to go in front of the fender for larger things. I think if you had one on each side your bed would start to feel pretty narrow.

E ND | Rimrock does make a drawer setup for a bed with gooseneck hitch if you do like that idea. I have a truck vault I bought used but love the drawers and how easy they are to organize. north central Iowa, Hampton | for what it's worth, I used drop shackles and lowering keys on a '17 HD 25000 and got it 2" lower. That helps some too. It's not quite so stupid high to crawl into.

SE Wyoming | I know it's not what you asked, but if you got a norstar sd tryck bed or something similar you would never go back to a regular bed and boxes.

I agree with you, regular truck bed is actually not that practical to work out of.

Rimrock with the 5th wheel opening has been an excellent toolbox for me. I would highly recommend one

Central Iowa | Are the Rimrocks hard to put in and take out when you don't need to use them?

E ND | They're usually bolted down down, not sure you'd want to take them in and out.
