Croswell, Michigan | Presently plant corn with a JD 1760 12x30 and beans with a 15' JD 750 plugging every other hole. I would really like a 15" planter for beans rather than the drill. Most of the splitter planters I see are an odd number of rows i.e. 11, 15 or 23. What I would prefer would be either a 12x15" or a 24x15" so it matches up better with my corn planter and I could get two 15's between last years 30's and not be crossing guess rows in the process. Realistically I will probably wind up with a 12x15" unless I really got a deal on a bigger one. Are there 12 or 24 row 15" planters out there? I could go with something like a JD 7240 set up for 15 narrow rows and just remove three units. The 11 row splitters don't look like they have enough bar to squeeze another unit on them. What are some Kinze model numbers that would be similar to the 7240 Deere's? I don't want to re-invent the wheel here but I have never seen what I think would be an ideal setup. southern MN | Where do you put the tractor & planter tires on an even number 15" unit? Think that is the deal you will have trouble with...... Take 3 rows off & you will be off-center or driving on the rows...... --->Paul

East of Dowagiac Michigan | I don't think Kinze made a 15" planter with all the units on the back like a JD 7240. Kinze 2000 or 3000 would have been available in 6/11 with double frame and pusher units. New Idea made a few planters with the Kinze units on a frame similar to a 7240.

cropsey, il 61731 | I'm pretty sure you could add one unit to a kinze 2600 and make it a 12/24 (lots of 16/32's running around here). One thing though, lots of guys are going back to 30" rows. With roundup and high priced seed 30's are looking more attractive all the time. I've got nearly no money in my 20r15 drill thing so I'll stay with 15's until there is a strong agronomic reason to change (I like the earlier canopy to help with weed control). Thanks, Pat

They made the CaseIH 5400 soybean specials in 12 row 15".

North Central Iowa | Kinze made those New Idea planters like the one in the picture below (I owned it and sold it last year). I think they just called them double frame planters (when I was selling mine there was a Kinze one on either Tractorhouse or USFarmer). I wouldn't ever go back to having 15" rows with the units all on one bar, just for the simple fact that trash and rocks will get stuck between rows occasionally, which is pretty much never a problem if you stagger the units. I think if you want an even # of rows, you're going to have to buy something and modify it to get there. Casey IL. ( I -70 ) then south on rt.49 | A little work you can take a 900 or800 [ IH ] and make a 20" planter real easy. good planter for o-till. In mich. there alot of 20" planters in tractor house.com. I'm on 20" and love it, sprayer can stay off the rows easly. Can still cut down the row or angle. There just nice spacing to work with.

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums. | Funny how the grass seems greener. I have a Monosem on 18" rows. I was thinking that's way too wide for the July planting date we usually have with group 4 beans. I was thinking to go to a 7.5" 750 drill. Are you guys planting 15" for double crop in June and July? Or full season beans in May? I just don't know. We're planning on dropping 175,000 in 18" rows next week.

Southeast MN | I like my 9 row 20" planter for notill beans. Works well with the 30" corn stalks, no 20 " bean row is right on the cornstalk. Almost as fast of canopy as the 15" rows, way better than the 30" I used to do. Here a 4 row wide planter is cheap, the trick is finding a splitter bar or a complete unit. I used it for the sweetcorn patch this year, won't know how that turns out until July or August. Edited by Dave Frisch 6/13/2009 21:42

West Union, IOWA FLOLO Farm 52175 | Rafe' don't forget, an awful lot of Deere Drills have been sold and they do a good job with Minimal Maintaince compaired to a row planter for the $$ invested.. Most of the problems you hear locally with Drill's are condition related......we tend to plant alot early soil temp wise then most would like to admit Just yesterday I was out spotting beans in for a guy that planted first pass with a 15 inch planter.... With that said, the best money I've spent on my drill is Aftermarket closing wheels, If it wasn't for all the small grain i've been doing I'd consider SI belts...but when it comes down to it can anybody really prove perfect spacing on beans pay?

Farmland, IN | We run a JD 1530 drill. It has a box like a drill, but it has Deere ME Plus units under it. Deere made a 15 foot model and a 20 ft. model. We have a 20 ft. model with 16 units, so you get two 15" bean rows between every corn row. Don't know if Deere still makes these, ours is an 02' model.

SW Ohio | You are right about the trash and rocks but I have off-set the units on my 1780 (7240 only newer) a foot and use Martin rolling trash wheels. I still need to do a better job on my trash management at harvest but things are beginning to get manageable. Dave

Like Dave said 20" rows can work quite well in 30" stalks. Few less rows to maintain and more room for residue than 15".
White planters with a splitter would be easy enough to add another unit on the back bar. Just need to add a little bar, get another unit and you're in business. Usually if the back bar has an odd number of rows there is an unused monitor wire on the harness. Everything (except the hitch on 6000 and 8000's) is bolted onto the bar on a White planter you can move rows and wheels to get the configuration you want. The 1st link below would work really nice set up as 12 row.

Croswell, Michigan | I like the 20" idea but I have a new sprayer set on 120" and tractors set on 60" whic I think won't quite work with 20" rows.

Tractor set on 60" works just fine here, but the sprayer behind it would have to be set either wider (140") or narrower (100"). We have the tractor and sprayer both set on 60".

West Central IL | Neighbor has always ran a Kinze 16/32 and offsets the drawbar so he is always driving between the rows.

NW Tennessee | There is a section in the owners manual on our Kinze 3600 that tells how to add another unit and, as KMK said, offset the drawbar so you aren't driving on old rows.
