I know nothing about John Deere's mostly because we never could afford one. Is a 5020 any good? The one I was looking at appears to be well taken care of. Should be about 150hp, right?

If you go to tractordata.com you can look up just about any brand or model of tractors. It will give just about all the detail on them. Hope that helps.

Those old work horses were built like a tank. Brute strong and virtually indestructable. Most were turned up and 200 horse was very easy to make and the 5020 still was solid as a rock.
I always thought they were a neat old mule and would make a nice unit to restore.

What really looked cool and I'd like to have is the 6030 floating around here with sound guard cab and 50 series 6619 engine. The 8650 (6619TA) engine was 300 HP out of the box.

5020 were known for having crank problems ,rear end were strong ,but problems in the bottom end will cost more to fix than the tractors worth. 40+year old tractor not depenable for work ,ok for a collector toy.

imo 5020 is the third best tractor j d made. only behind 4020 and a 6030. we have one for 30yrs now. if my dad cant tare it up in 30 yrs. they have my approval. Ours has always been hard to start, but nothing ether and good batteries couldnt fix. its not a tractor i would want to spend all day on, but for the hobby farmer still a great pulling tractor. the pto on those tractors were a joke, expensive to fix and pretty weak.

Wasn't the 5010 the one with the crank problem....thought it was fixed in the 20 series.

Always thought the 5020 was a tough old bird.

I've had mine since 1981, it's a 1970. Overhauled it in'97 and it wasn't burned out. They are good old tractors, good lugging power and they were dependable. Went through a few injection pumps in the '90's until I got a rebuilt from a different source and never had trouble again. You will want to wear hearing protection, though. They are noisy.

Buddy has a late 5020 that we turbo'd & intercooled w/6030 parts. It's been pulling 175 for at least 20 years, maybe more like 30...like someone else said, not very comfy, but strong ol' horse...

Gordon,

You got me! Years ago, now, I was the DSM for Callahan in SW Ohio. With your monicker of Fayette Farmer I was curious who it might be. Checked your profile and with the mention of Packard cars, I was thinking I might have known you in ages past. Sounds old, doesn't it? Several people on here have met me in my past life, and several currently know me. It's a great board!

Hi Bill, I remember you from the old Dick Smith Pioneer seed days. Callahan were one of the first private brand seed companys if I remember right? everone was using bin run, brown bag,or public varity beans. BOY have we came along way. That was in the late 70s right?(ouch that hurt). Dicks doing ok, his grandkids in FFA with my son. Do you still have the white Avanti? You know packards and studebakers are like cousins, (well maybe like step cousins?). Bob morton is the 4300 owner in michigan i was thing of.

Actually the Avanti has always been red. Still got it, although I poked a hole in the right rear 2 years ago. Bought a body from firewall back to repair it with so I could section the correct piece from that body. If you see Dick, or Kevin say hello for me. That has been quite awhile. Does Dick still have barn dances in the fall for field days?

Gordon,

When I left WCH years ago, I came with Terra International (who had bought all the old Sohigro Outlets) I had worked for Sohigro before coming to S Ohio. So that brought me to Michigan. Worked for Terra for 5 years, went to work for Alpine Plant Foods, they married NaChurs 6-7 years later. After a total of 13 years, I left and founded LFB Solutions.
