Subject: Broken parking brake on JD 4840

The parking brake quit working on the 4840. I slipped the shifter into park position when it was barely rolling and something clicked. Didn't sound to serious but now the trans will not lock in park. The shift linkage looks to be OK. Is there something in the transmission that could be damaged? Can someone tell me where to start looking for the problem?
Thanks

You probably stripped the teeth off the park pawl. I would check all the linkage adjusments first, but it is most likely to need major surgery to fix this.

Darn the luck. I'll check out the linkage stuff first and hope for the easy fix.
Thanks for info

There is a roll pin that can shear. On the right side almost the top of the transmission. Maybe, I hope so.
I think there was a revision kit.

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
That used to irritate me to no end. They broke 3 tractors of mine by snatching it into park before it was stopped. It's not a brake, is a pawl. Pawls aren't meant to slow you down, they're meant to keep it from rolling when it's already stopped. Two of them had to be split to fix. The 4840 would roll the linkage over and you could fix it from the outside with a big pair of channel locks. Hopefully you can fix yours from the outside.

Kittitas Co. Wa. State

Brakes are those funny 2 pedals on the floor. designed specifically to STOP a tractor.

Park LOCK is inside the transmission and designed to lock the tractor in place once it has COMPLETELY STOPPED MOVING,  so it will not roll away.

Pretty simple concept but if you violate it,, it's gonna cost some real bucks to fix the "PARK BRAKE".....

My thoughts exactly. Everyone around here gets a lecture on this topic when they start tractor driving.
